The autumn harvest festivals have begun. What are the autumn harvest festivals? Good question. In short, they include waking up at the crack of dawn to carry a huge, very heavy portable shrine (in which the rice god lives) and another huge, even heavier carriage (in which four children play the taiko/drum). The portable shrine is called a mikoshi and the carriage for the children is called a danjiri. They are carried on several people’s shoulders all day while they visit different parts of the neighborhood to bless houses and farms for a good harvest season. Then, finally the rice god is carried to its new home at a different Shinto shrine. Oh, one part I forgot to mention is that all of this is done while screaming chants at the top of your lungs and, ... read more

Well, the big news is that my junior high school student, Emiko, finally had her English speech competition last weekend in Matsuyama, and WON SECOND PLACE!!! She was second best out of 36 students from all of Ehime prefecture! This means that she will now be going on to the national competition in Tokyo in November (on her birthday)! She is so excited because she has never been to Tokyo before and it will be a great way to spend her birthday. I am so proud of her and am glad that I actually made it down to Matsuyama that day to see it all. I was reluctant to go, since it meant getting up at 5:30am on a Sunday to catch the ferry in order to make the train to Matsuyama in time for the ... read more

Right, So my plan was to back date everything and start the story from the beginning of arriving and make my way smoothly to the present, but this is proving to be far to complicated and I simply am starting to forget what happened. Plus, the greatest weekend so far took place a few weeks ago and I have been putting off writing about it so that I could catch up with myself, but quite frankly that is'nt that fun. So I will divulge the story of my Aki Matsuri (Autumn festival). No doubt a few of you may have had time to check out Ethan and Jennie's similar experiences but if you haven't then here goes. This is the big one, as far as the festivals go in everyway and is celebrated using a number ... read more

Okay, I guess it's impossible to avoid culture shock no matter how many times you've been to a country. It's a weird thing, because it's like a disease you don't know you have until it gets really bad. I say this because the first stage of culture shock isn't really shock at all. It's more of a super happy feeling of excitement and curiosity. So, when I first arrived in Japan, I was often asked, ''Do you feel culture shocked?'' and I would think ''No, I don't feel shocked at all, I'm just happy to be here.'' But now, right on schedule the downside of culture shock is setting in. It's said that after a month or two of feeling mostly happy and excited, you begin to get irritated over certain details of the foreign culture. ... read more

Hello all! I’ve been slacking off on my blog entries because of my very busy schedule. Sorry! Now that the schools’ undookai and the holiday and typhoon are over, it’s really time to start studying hard for all the students. For Jennie-sensei, this means it’s really time to start planning an insane amount of lessons. Last week I drew about twenty different picture cards for visual aids of everything from fruit to scenes describing the grammar point of ''It is difficult for me to get up in the morning;’’ I printed out pictures of everything from famous people in America to American road signs; I thought up a bunch of games; I learned John Denver’s ''Country Roads’’ on my fiddle in one night so that I could teach it to my class the next day (at ... read more

The school year is well underway here on Yuge Island. My first couple weeks of classes have gone great. Well, to tell the truth, the first week was a little terrifying for several reasons. I think even if all my classes had gone perfectly, I still would have freaked out the first week just because everything was so new and intimidating. With that in mind, everything did NOT go perfectly. My first day teaching at a school was at my elementary school. I had to teach an hour lesson on numbers (easy, right?) to third graders. I prepared a couple of games, but that’s pretty much it because I was under the impression that the teacher I teach with, or JTE (Japanese Teacher of English) would be the one explaining things to the kids. So, the ... read more

Another week has gone by on the island of Yuge, and I'm not sick of it yet! In fact, I think I like it more and more everyday. As I get to know my way around, the food in the grocery store, the people's faces and the names to go with them, and my students, this place becomes an even nicer environment to live in. I even successfully paid my first month's bills! I guess that's some kind of sign that I can make it independently in Japan. And, just in case you were wondering, my fridge continues to be stocked with fruits and veggies from neighbors. It must be fig season, because it seems that I have to eat 3 a day to keep up with the rate I am receiving them. Im also beginning to get ... read more

Well, it's only been about two weeks since I came back to Japan, but it feels like I've been here forever. I am teaching English on a remote island in the Inland Sea of Japan called Yuge. Yuge is part of a town made up of four islands called Kamijima. It is technically part of Ehime prefecture in Shikoku, but it's much closer to Hiroshima prefecture in Honshu. Yuge is only accessible by ferry. There are no roads or trains that connect the island to the mainland. Therefore, life here is much more isolated, rural, traditional, and laid back. There are only about 3,000 people living on this island. My job is to teach English at the nursery school, elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, and adult conversation classes. Luckily each school has a ... read more

So, early on that Wednesday morning I got up, thought I had lost my passport, did the worst shave in history and stumbled onto the bus to aiport no2. Then on the crest of a Typhoon we made the 1 hour jouney South to Matsuyama. Ehime translates as 'Love princes' and is reffered to as the sunkissed corner of Japan, not least because of its output of Mikan (oranges or madarines I forget which) but also as it sit with its coastline on the Inland Sea or Seto Naikai. Its very still and very hot (Even now as I write this on the 9th Oct the sun is shining outside and its a healthy 25 degrees outside). Piling off the plane, feeling incredibly nervous for some reason, we left the tiny airport and were greated by ... read more
