I'm longing for a blue sky holiday near the sea. Initially was aiming for Maldives but got chickened at the last minute due to the hefty pricetag. So the quest for a more "budget friendly" option started with the usual suspect: Phuket, Krabi, Bali, Lombok, Langkawi, etc. But then again it was "been there done that" de ja vu.
So then I surveyed for a more "up and coming" places rather than well established. My gaze stopped upon a place called "Belitung".
50 mins by flight from Jakarta, it is still in proximity with the big cities. They don't have international airport yet but still reachable.
What's so special about the place? Well have you ever seen "Seychelles" in Africa? (it’s where Prince William went on his honeymoon btw). Belitung also have the big boulders of rocks by the size of double deckers lying on the beach. It has unspoiled white beaches with turquoise water.
As most of rural area in Indonesia, local transportation is a challenge. So just to keep life simple, we just book a 3D2N package via a
local tour agent . I’m also particularly intrigued because they are offering “photographer package” where they claimed that they
will take you to special places that’s extra ordinary to take pictures. It already including private car + driver + 2 nights at 3 star hotel + 3 times food/day and snacks + return airport pick up/drop off service (around 220 USD per person including tax). So basically, almost everything except for the airfare (around 60-70 USD per person, return)
We were picked up by our guide at the airport. Quick stop at the hotel, we were whisked to Tanjung Kelayang. We cannot believe how empty the beach was! Literally, EMPTY. It was a gorgeous day with blue sky. Patterned by clouds (which actually makes the sky looks nicer in the
pictures). White sands… Turquoise water…. It’s so empty that you can skinny dip if you want to ha ha… (I DID NOT!) The tide is low so we can walk up to like 30 meters in to the sea. From there I can see sections where the sea is blue and brown.
We could stay there all day but the day is still long. Next stop: Tanjung Tinggi. In Indonesia this place is famous because it was used in a film. Never watched the movie. But the
Mie Belitung
We heard so many hype about this, looks nice but... the taste doesn't make me crave for it. place is really amazing! To enter the beach, you have to roam around this maze of big rock boulders… and voila! A secret beach!
Then we need to hike a bit (so wearing comfy shoes is a must). And we end up in this giant rock (like 4 meters high) and can see the whole bay from that view point. It was just breathtaking…. I actually took a
pictures of my husband and the rock – he’s the small dot in white T-Shirt! You can see that the comparison is very contrast.
Lunch was okay but indeed the seafood is fresh. Actually after lunch we’re suppose to see more places (including see sunset from another view point). But it’s raining after lunch – like really HARD rain. So we decided to go to the hotel and call it a day. It’s okay, tomorrow we’re going to have an early start anyway – as we’re going to take sunrise tour. See ya!
Tips
- Start your day really early, monsoon nowadays are unpredictable and it tends to rain after lunch time. Even in dry season.
- Set your expectation well. This place IS gorgeous but infrastructure wise its not really a luxurious place. Would be suitable for budget travelers and photography enthusiast but not ideal for honeymooners.
