Tomek ... and the hard balinese life!Tomek ... and the hard balinese life!Tomek ... and the hard balinese life!

Buengiorno tutti! Salam!

Well, our weekly blog has become a once-in-a-while blog. Probably better. Especially for you. Nature is having it's way with Indonesia. Two days ago we were in Yogyakarta and in Borobodur (pictures will come as well we promiss, but not today), and the night we left a nearby volcano (Mount Merapi at about 20 km) erupted. Everybody leaving 10 km around the volcano was evacuated. It is throwing huge amounts of ashes into the air, which we are also receiving here in Pangandaran. Then there are some floods in Jakarta. And finally, an earthquake hit the coast of Sumatra, and subsequently there was a tsunami there. Anyway, we are at a safe distance from all of this and we enjoy what Pangandaran offers to us (Sun, surf, great people & good food!). After traveling and doing a lot in Bali and Java, we are taking it easy here!

We spent about 2 weeks in Bali. We started of in Kuta. A very (very!) touristy little town, but great to learn how to surf! In Kuta we also rented a motorbike... Skillfully, the inexperienced Tomek managed to get through the Balinese traffic. Through beautiful landscapes we discovered

the southern peninsula of Bali! Then we travelled to Ubud, a more quiet little cultural town, and a great place to make some daytrips. You'll see some of the pictures of these trips: rice fields (lots of them), temples, volcanos but also coffee tasting among others. One of the highlight was a small little warung were they served a great curry chicken and were we met some nice folks!

After Ubud, we did a trek to the highest mountain/volcano of Bali! Great idea! We left at 11.30 in the night, with the objective to arrive before sunrise at the top. The start was at the holy temple of Besakih at about 800 meters above sea level. From the first minute our guide Mari, aka the moutaingoat, started running up the mountain. Even after 4 hours of just going up he was still taking sprints up the mountain and then waited for us while we slowly followed. When we arrived near the top there was a nice chill moment were we made a fire and ate some nasi goreng (forget about broodje gezond or baguette jambon beurre, here it is nasi goreng for breakfast, lunch and dinner). We regained some power,

but the last part was hard and were were constantly gasping for air. However, we made it to the top at 3142 meters and we saw an amazing sunrise! The walk down was hell, actually much worse that going up! We arrived completely broken at the bottom 12 hours after we started! It is an understatement to say that our legs hurt the next few days.

That is why we decided to take it a bit easy again, and we chilled in Padang Bay, spent our time at the beach and doing a bit of snorkeling at the beach and having beers in the night. Then we went up north to Tirta Gangga to see the watertemple. Also we did a bike trip, passing amazing ricefields. Unfortunately after going downhill for two hours we had to cycle back up (obviously it had to happen!). Or walk. And this is when I suggest to all other women to hide the TV from guys during the month of July, when Le Tour de France might give them such ideas as going up the hill is easy & cool 😉. Trust me, break it or hide it next year! Our last stop

in Bali was Lovina, perhaps the place we enjoyed least in Bali.

Bali is just great: the island is so green, it has everything (sea, sun, fresh fruits and good food) and the people are so friendly. They always smile and are so generous. Sometimes it can be a bit touristy but not too bad. One of the great experiences was the traveling itself. We went from place to place with bemos: crappy little vans that are mainly used by locals. One time we shared a ride with 10 bags of rice, a little lamb, a guy holding a 4 meter bamboo stick out of the window, a breastfeeding mother and a little kid throwing up...

And now we are in Java for some days already, which we will tell about next time!

Btw your comments & news from home are welcome, although we might not be able to reply to all!

Cheers,
Tomek & Ame

Amelie & scooter & off road warungAmelie & scooter & off road warungAmelie & scooter & off road warung

First warung in Bali ... in the middle of no where ...

This is how they actually walk around all the time in bali... ready in 5 mins in the morning!

Luwak coffee. Dont ask how it was made ...Luwak coffee. Dont ask how it was made ...Luwak coffee. Dont ask how it was made ...

A bientot,
Tomek & Ame
