I attended these dances my last night. Very impressive. Telling of the Ramayana with an all-male chorus representing the army of monkeys.

I arranged for Agung to drive me to the coast. We stopped on the way to leave some coconuts with his son, since his wife was preparing for a ceremony that night.

You can see Mt. Agung in the background. Agung is 3142 meters high and is still an active volcano. When it lasted erupted in 163, it killed 1500 people and caused a lot of damage.

Needless to say, the sand of Amed is black, as is that of 3/4 of the beaches of the island.

A colleague from the French School of Shanghai recommended my hotel: Hidden Paradise Cottages.

I'd always wanted to have an outdoor bathroom, esp. a gorgeous, tiled one like this one! The climate is so pleasant in Bali I imagine you can shower outdoors all year round.

Every night local boys come and play on the beach, and usually a few pale-faced European guests join them.

I went over to the Gili Islands on "a fast boat" but for only a day. They're a young people's and divers' paradise!

There are 3 Gili Islands. I took this photo from the beach of Gili Trawangan. The large island of Lombok, with Mt. Rinjani (3728 m), can be seen in the background.

I asked the driver who took me to the airport from Amed to stop off at Uluwatu on the way. Located at the southern tip of the island, the temple offers a fantastic view.

We also stopped here. Jimbaran beach is near the airport and has lovely white sand. Apparently, nearby Kuta Beach nearby is crowded with surfers, whereas Nusa Dua is where all the upscale resorts are.

Great adventure as only you can do. Hope you have no culture shock as you reenter the Western world. Do you have any plans to be in or near Chicago this summer? Have a safe ride home. Betty
