There are approximately 144 students and 43+ support staff at each competition

My assistants and I are called Petits Bras, which means little arms/helpers in French. Christina (Russia), Lili and Diane (France). All three spoke French, which is necessary with the dual French/English editions

Getting to know the students from all over the world is a highlight of the competition. Participants are eligible to volunteer to work at a competition 2 years after they participate. In 2022 some of these lovely young people will join the support staff, typically working with me or as a tutor working with the students. With enough experience (professionally and w/Pictet), they can become a juror.

At Pictet 33 the field test simulation was a hostage situation. Christophe is leading a group of hostages to their next 'station.' I also played a hostage-taker.

2 of my assistants, Lilia (here) and Christina played injured civilians in the field test simulation. Diane & I were hostage takers elsewhere. At the end Lilia and Christina were totally exhausted, but the students said their performances were "Oscar worthy."

Tutors are coaches for the participants. They cannot advise on the law, but help mostly with all aspects of presentation. They attend every test of all four of their teams, meet with them afterwards to critique, listen to worries, etc. They often work with their teams well into the night.

At Pictet 34 I had 3 assistants: Mariya (Russia), Bhot (Cambodia), Rachael (Zimbabwe & S. Africa). Bhot & Rachael are playing prisoners of war; Bhot was a gay prisoner and Rachael a rebel fighter. Mariya and I were 'guides' working elsewhere.

At different stations students were challenged in various ways: having to talk themselves out of going to a POW camp. Had to know the law under IHL as to why their character shouldn't be imprisoned.

The test started with the gathering of the students who immediately started singing. When our 'leaders' (in togas) appeared, we were lead around the hotel grounds, stopping frequently for the leaders to address the group; ended with a song at the pool and a pool party

We had 2 field tests in 34, the night one was a hoot; ended with coupons for drinks by the pool. It was still sweltering and the 'leaders' wearing sheets/togas were completely soaked. Have an hysterical video of students dancing Gangnam Style, but can't upload

For the jury to select the semi-finalist (always arduous) they went to a temple complex for lunch and deliberations. The support staff joined them late afternoon for a temple tour and dinner before rushing back to Denpasar for the Tutor Show and announcement of semi-finalists.

fond Bali memories!
thanks, as always, for the informative and lively reporting! I flashed on memories of my two visits to Bali, in 1990 and in 1993. I remember someone once explaining to me the scope of Indonesia...if a giant stood in Seattle and threw a clump of mud which splattered all the way to Miami, those 17,000 splatters would represent the Indonesian Archipelago Islands.

What a trip!
As I sit at home for the umpteenth week, this tour of Bali is a welcome diversion. As always, Kathy provides professional-quality photos with the historical background and narration so that I feel like a world traveler! Thank you! ?
