After 36 hours the Grand Turk Express arrived to the capital. Between the rails right in front of my window bare butts greeted me in the morning light, as the slum dwellers went around doing their business as usual. This might be a shocking site for someone who is new to India, but in the past few months I have read many travel books featuring the subject, so this didn't came as a surprise ( although still shocking)...
actually Delhi surprised me in a good way. It is has some real charming areas, and you can meet some really friendly people too. If you leave the central area with all the cows and the hassle, you could think that you are not in India. Compare to what I have expected it was not bad at all. I walked around the streets of Pharganj in order to find breakfast. Teasing aromas lured me and called invitingly from the small restaurants. everyone was frying or baking something really good. Am I the only person who has gained weight in India????
I met some cheerful locals going around the colorful market, having breakfast, selling fruits and all sort of nips and craps under
the sun. The street food is tasty and you can find every imaginable variations of it coming all the way from Ladakh to Kanyakumari.
I wondered around the aromatic market, where one of the spice wendors introduced me to the secret of a good masala ( they call masala the spice mixtures), haggled for fresh juicy mangoes, lichies and ducked ox carts or crazy kamikaze rickshaw and motorcycle drivers.
I spent most of my time in the Pakistani and Irani consulates trying to get trough international bureaucracy -tough cookie if you ask- so only had time to visit the Qutabh Minar this time. I'm off to Agra tomorrow to see the breathtaking beauty of the legendary Taj Mahal, and enjoy the ancient remnants of Fatehpur Sikri, the capital of debating and philosophy once built by the Mughal emperor Akbar the Great. But I'll be back in the capital after that for some quality time and hands on history lessons : )
I hope you'll enjoy the pics.
