There are two main principles that must always be observed when driving in Kolkata, also known as the place where driving instructors come to weep.

1. The brake is just an obstacle to you getting where you want to go and consequently falls into the same category as other vehicles, pedestrians, road signs, local bylaws and most buildings. You should never feel the need to use it and focus all your foot's attention on the pedal to the right of it.

2. You have a horn built into your car. Ask yourself why would someone bother to put the hard work into making a horn for your car? Now imagine how upset they would be if you didn't use it. Listen. What do you hear? It certainly won't be the sound of someone not using their horn. If anything has the temerity to obstruct your view, as a matter of common politeness, you must alert them to their rudeness, loudly. If you receive any angry or shocked looks then accept their apology with good grace and proceed.
