Plans. You can only plan so much and so early but if fate intervenes, then there is nothing much you can do about it. What had been a stellar early plan for a trek to Kashmir Great Lakes, had to be scrapped at the last moment which resulted in a trek to another place I had on my bucketlist. Kashmir fell into chaos in the first week of July 2016, when Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter by the military. Indiahikes assured us that we will not face any issues with the trek but most of us were not sure about the situation there and decided to cancel the trek. But we had already booked flights and so we decided to find an alternate trek. Though Indiahilkes offered us Hampta pass trek, I was very ... read more

It was 6:00 in the morning when my alarm rang that day. I was in my bed, completely merged in the soft and hot blanket provided by the hotel boy of Monarc Hotel in Mussoorie. I checked my phone and it was showing a temperature of 4 degree Celsius, with a prediction of heavy snowfall. OMG!! Snowfall? Prediction? I mean seriously? That also in Mussoorie, which has a height of barely 2006 m? I rubbed my eyes once again and rushed towards my hotel balcony to witness the actual outside scenario. And my hope sank. It was still dark outside with no hint of either sun or snowfall. I could barely see a distance of 2 /3 m with my naked eyes. It was FOGGY!! And it was damn COLD!! My heart was broken. I looked ... read more

“The wind whispers the message of the mountains; to be understood only by the chasers of clouds and dreamers of stars”. After my recent visit to the Queen of Hills-Darjeeling, I was stuck awe at the view of the majestic Kanchenjunga; though I have been to the hills of the Western Ghats quite few times, I have never felt such bliss. After this first encounter with these magnificent mountains I decided to plan a trek in the Himalayas in December (so the probability of finding snow is greater and I had my Christmas holidays). On my way back to Chennai from West Bengal, I have done my research and shortlisted “Winter Kauri Pass” (primarily because this trek had the most number of snow photographs ;-D ) and felt I should do it alone even if my ... read more

India is a country where both the natural and spiritual worlds share a deep and primordial connection. This is a place where natural elements like air, fire, earth and water are revered as gods. The most important of these natural deities are the rivers of India and the most powerful amongst them is the river Ganga. She is a water goddess who descended from the heavens to cleanse the humans of all their sins. She has been a blessing to the hot and crowded plains of the northern India through countless millennia, by creating and replenishing one of the most fertile soils on earth. All around her the great cycles of birth, death and rebirth are endlessly played out. Flowing through these natural and spiritual worlds is the Ganga - India’s river of life. India has ... read more

One month until my birthday! I've certainly been faced with the challenge to grow gracefully here in India. I'm starting to warm up to her as I realize that it's just not going to be an easy trip. She's going to chew me up and spit me out as something new. No exaggeration, every single day has been a new adventure. It's still an awesome experience though- I wake up to the Ganga, food costs less than $1 most days, I've got a plethora of good friends... Rishikesh is a dry town and meat free. Orion and I hadn't even noticed that until someone mentioned it. We so quickly had taken it for granted that we could walk into any spot and have a sober conversation or order almost anything on the menu and get it ... read more

Maybe you've heard, but I got robbed on the train on my way from Haridwar to Delhi. A man followed me into the train, caused a scene, grabbed my bag and left the train. He was a professional - it was impressive really. Everything was under his control and ran like clockwork. He acted like he was helping and then managed to create a human shield of Indians behind him so I couldn't get through to follow him. He got away with my bag that included passport (with visa and my beloved collection of stamps), bank card, credit card, over $400 cash, iPhone, laptop, steripen, purchases from Rishikesh, journal, books, ... a lot of stuff, both valuable and irreplaceable. Every day I've remembered something else that was in the bag that I can't ever get back ... read more

Judging myself as a yogi on retreat, I'm having a hard time accepting that I'm not really enjoying India. There's a ton of factors involved of course- a big one being that my travel partner and I aren't even on speaking terms anymore. But I'm having trouble seeing and feeling India for the vibrant place it could be. I've witnessed so much pollution (trash and noise) and places that must have adapted to tourism in the ugliest ways. While I've met some genuinely nice Indians, I've also been scammed and harassed by a great number more. On another note, while the circumstances of why I'm alone aren't ideal, I'm really enjoying the freedom and independence. I can go where I want with no agenda and can change my mind at any second without explanation. I can ... read more
