Delhi As the planned Trip to Tibet is cancelled due to the Chinese closing the border to Brits, we decide to go to India a week earlier than planned and spend a few days in Haridwar & Rishikesh – we considered a day or so in Mussoorie but felt this was too ambitious. We arrive in Delhi – Terminal 3 which is new and impressive and get a pre-paid taxi (Rs350) to our hotel Namaskar India in Karol Bagh (who’d offered free taxi to the city but didn’t show - not totally unexpected as hostel booker previous guests had similar problems). The Airport Express is not working – closed due to maintenance since July’12 – to open – anyone’s guess. Basically the contractors screwed up & now have to redo much of it. The drive in ... read more

Uttarakhand The region is believed to be the Land of Gods and is place of lots of Ashrams, Yoga Gurus, meditation centres and so on. One will find a lot of Sadhus in the area. We recommend a book by Patrick Levy (French writer): Sadhus - going beyond the dreadlocks for more understanding about their life, their purpose and their philosophy. 18/09 to 24/09 : Rishikesh: The Beatles spent time in an ashram but this one is abandoned since then and nothing much is left apart seeing nature taking over. Rishikesh is the Capital of the World for Yoga, Meditation and Ashrams. The town is separated by 2 suspension bridges (jhula) -which could do with some refurbishment. There is enough space for a man and a cow, a man and a scooter, but not more. (It ... read more

Day 1: Kathgodam to Birthi. This is how it all began. Rajesh and six of his colleagues were to attend another colleague, Manish’s wedding in Dharchula. It was to be a touch and go trip, as the travel time involved was a lot and these guys had only a day’s leave clubbed with a weekend… no boss would allow six of his men to go on leave simultaneously to attend the wedding of a seventh! Despite vociferous opposition from Rajesh’s friends, I wheedled my way into this all-male party as the opportunity to visit the border town of Dharchula was too good to resist. We left Dehradun by the Kathgodam Express on the night of 17th February 2011 and reached Kathgodam early next morning. Getting off at the picturesque and well maintained railhead put us in ... read more

There’s this place. Well, it’s not Rishikesh, it’s not Shivpuri, and it’s not Byasi, or Devprayag or Tapovan, but it’s somewhere there. So it’s about 23 km north of Rishikesh, and about 4 km south of Byasi. It’s two bends in the road after a bridge on your right called Malakunthi. There’s a cliff to your left and a tiny green board on the right saying ‘Camp Silver Sands’. Just behind the sign is a steep fall into one of the rapids of the fast flowing River Ganga. But, keeping the sign directly in front of you, to your left you will see a thin, feeble dirt track. Just follow it. There, there is no electricity, so we sleep on the beach beneath a cozy blanket of stars at night; There’s water shortage, so we take ... read more

The bus to Haridwar from Saharanpur was at 4am so I had to get up at 3am. When I got to Haridwar, the last bus to Joshimath (5:30 am) had already left so I had to go to Rishikesh. Once in Rishikesh, I had to take a rickshaw to the bus station for long distance buses. I missed the government bus and had to settle for private buses which are a bit more expensive. It was not the higher cost that I had a problem with, it was having to wheel and deal and to be really careful as they were sure to cheat me (government buses have set rates). I got on a bus whose owner said that they were going to Joshimath and the fare was 220 Rs. I didn’t trust what he said ... read more

The cheapest rooms listed in the Lonely Planet were 300 Rs. There was an establishment, right at the very beginning of Joshimath just as the bus enters the town, that charged 200 Rs per room but it was horrendous. They changed the pillow cases but they were still dirty, the bed sheets were dirty and the toilet was so small I had to sit sideways to fit. Internet in town was 60 Rs/hr. Downstairs from the place I was staying was a restaurant but the food was awful. In fact everything was awful, the bus ride, the town, the people, the guesthouse and the food. The only amazing thing was the nature. On the way there, the bus passed by really really deep gorges and we went mostly along the river. There were mountains and peaks ... read more

Euer Thorsten... read more
