Cows are considered sacred in India. Hindu people don't eat cows and cows wander the streets, they even hang out on the beach. Traffic stops for them and beware if you hit one- you'll be in big trouble. Last time I was in India a hungry holy cow pushed me off the sidewalk. I think she was looking for food.

Here in Rishikesh there are lots of cows. Some of them live with people but some of them just live in the street. If you go out late at night or early in the morning you you walk past lots of sleeping cows. They're also really good at climbing up and down stairs here.
