Even though we are already in Malaysia, here is a recount of our adventures in the very south of India...

Our train ride from Varkala to Kanniyakumari was supposed to be uneventful. However... we get onto the wrong train that stops half an hour later at it's final destination. We search frantically for our train (which comes a bit later) - there are no signs whatsoever. i guess you are supposed to know. We get helped by a young man who is waiting for the same train. Two hours on a train takes to the India's southern most corner. We get an autorikshaw and ask him to take us to our hotel. It appears that the driver has no idea where ths hotel is. We have to call the owner and finally get t oour destination. The guesthouse is a contemporary building and is mainly used for conferences and various courses. There was a one month course running for a yoga teacher certification (see teh picture of the yoga guru). We got the only spare room (or rather apartment). Food is provided for yogis, so we eat with them. It is pretty good, but again vegetarian. Not even fish...

This lady was cought in Tsunami. She lost a few teeth, all her merchandise and her speach was affected... She is forty...

Next day is a Christmas day. We get up early and decide to walk into town to see the tourist center. We get a shock that yesterday's quite little town turned into a sea of men all wearing black! Thousands of them! (we were so shocked that we did not even take any pictures... 😞 ) These were pilgrims mainly from Kerala, coming to Kanniyakumari to pray, have a dip in the sea, shed their "old clothes" (hence black), and put on the new ones, then go home. The tourist center was closed of course as it was Christmas day....

India is very good with holidays - they celebrate all religions holidays. And it is ok to say to a Hindu "Merry Christmas" (no need for "happy Holiday").

Afternoon is rather hot (remember - it is WINTER here too!), but we decide to brave the town again. tHe sea of black men is GONE! (another shock, as now we are prepared to take pictures). The town is quite until about 4pm, then gets busy with local tourists from the Northern states of India.

we come back to the hotel in the evening and are pleasantly surprised to

Spalvinga...
find a Christmas dinner. It is prepared for the yogis (who are getting ready for their graduation exams), and we join in. What a pleasant evening...

Next morning we are on the road again - to Madurai. One thing we want to see is the Sri Menakshi temple complex. However, it is being repainted, and everything is covered with coconut leaves... 😞 We are told that we are lucky because this onky happens once in 15 years!!!!!

Oh well. Next day we get driven to Trichy from where we fly to Malaysia...

Happy New Year!!! See you soon back in Calgary, city of snow and cold... Brr...

fyi: we uploaded a few more pictures to the Udaipur blog.

Nors jau Malaizijoje, nusprendeme pabaigti rasyti apie savo nuotykius pieciausioje Indijos dalyje...

Musu traukinys is Varkalos i Kanniyakumari turejo buti be nuotykiu. Bet isedom ne i ta traukini, tai blaskemes sekancioje stotyje ieskodami savo platformos. Zenklu jokiu. Turim klausineti keleiviu. Gerai, kad zmones cia geranoriski... Dvi valandos traukinyje, ir mes jau pieciausiame Indijos taske. Pasiemem riksa, bet tas nezino kur musu viesbutis. Pagaliau issiaiskinom. viesbutis paprastai nuomojamas konferencijoms ar kokiems kursams. Teturi 8 kambarius. Gruodzio menesi buvo isnuomotas Jogos mokytoju kursui. Pridedam jogos guru nuotrauka. Valgom kartu su jogais (tas reiskia - nei mesos, nei zuvies). Nieko, bet abu numetem svorio... 😊

Selkanti diena - Kaledos. Anksti atsikele nusprendem iseiti pasivaikscioti, susirasti turistu centra. Gavom soka kai pamatem, kaip miestas pasikeite nuo ramaus vakarykscio i juodai apsirengusiu vyru tukstantine jura! mums buvo toks sokas, jog net nenufotografavom... Tai piligrimai, keliaujantys pagrinde is Keralos valstijos. Atvaziuoja pasimelsti, issimaudyti juroje, nusimesti senus (juodus) drabuzius, ir persirengti naujais. Tada vaziuoja namo. Turistu centras aisku buvo uzdarytas...

Indija gera savo sventemis - svencia visu religiju sventes. Visi.

Popiete gan karsta (cia taip pat ziema!), bet nusprendem vel iseiti i miesta. Juodu vyru jura pradingus! (tik siuksles besimetancios liko). Miestelis gan ramus iki 4 po pietu. Tada pasirodo vietiniai turistai is siauriniu Indijos valstiju...

Grizus i viesbuti musu laukia Kaledu vakariene. Ji paruosta jogams, bet ir mes pakviesti. Labai malonus vakaras..

Sekanti ryta - ir vel i kelia, vaziuojam i Madurai. Norim pamatyti Sri Menakshi sventykla. Labai gaila, bet visas sventyklos kompleksas apdangstytas kokoso lapais, nes ji visa perdazoma!!!! Mus tikina, jog mums labai pasiseke - mat tai vyksta tik kas 15 metu...
colourful...colourful...colourful...

Labai spalvingas pajuris...

Na, nieko. Sekancia diena vaziuojam i Trichy, ir is ten skrendam in Malaizija... Zinoma, su nuotykiais 😊

Viso ko geriausio Naujaisiais metais!

Tarp kitko, mes dadejom nuotrauku i Udaipuro blog'a...
