After my short but actionpacked trip to Sri Lanka I needed some time to chill. I knew that the best place to do it , is Mamallapuram. I have been there before and I know a good hotel, I know all the restaurants, touts, vendors, so if I want to be alone ( which is quiet a feat in India ) this is the place to be. After leaving the airconditioned airport building in Chennai the heat attacked me.
for the first half an hour it was difficult to breath and I started to sweat like there is no tomorrow. I soon got used to it tho and got in a prepaid taxi . The cabdriver told me that there was a big fire in Mamallapuram and my hotel burned down, but he will take me somewhere else . I told him that it is not my first time in India and I am positive that my hotel is still standing waiting for my return... after that he tried to ditch me on the signpost of Mamallapuram and I told him that he wont get any baksheesh if he wont take me to my hotel, and that made a positive effect
on him. Peter my hotel manager greeted me with a huge smile and laughed when I told him about the cabdriver telling me that the hotel has burned down.
We shared a couple of beers in the afternoon sitting in the hanging chair in the palm shaded terrace and talked about the Tsunami. around the hotel there are 4 orphanages housing children s. in Mamallapuram alone there are 180 Tsunami Orphans. Peter offers me to take me to his village ,Pattipulam the next day , and I thank him the offer.
We set off with a bike lended by a friend and off we go to Pattipulam. 800 people live in the village and the kids are running after our bike smiling and greeting us. all the women came out of their shacks and offered me tea, lunch, coconut, sweets and whatnots..... Peter told me that they don't see many white faces around here. We visit the school where Peters children study. The kids are very friendly and all want to hold my hand.. Peters children are very bright and friendly ,apparently very proud of their dads white friend. Life in the village is different than what I have seen
so far in India. The shacks are made from coconut leaves and every year they have to rebuild them. Some of the people has houses made of cement bricks, but mainly all the buildings are made of leaves. I got invited inside one of the diminutive shacks and suddenly I feel the excitement what Lin must have felt in Shantaram when getting his first real experience of an Indian slum... ( By the way that is THE BOOK you have to read while in India) I am really living it. There is a water tank where they can get water from twice a day for 1 hour each time. That's when they take their shower, and fill their large water containers. Life is basic here, but the people does not mind. They appear to be happy. The kids and adults are smiling, laughing, joking . they all have time, they are all kind and generous. I take pictures of everyone and promise to develop the pics and send it via Peter. The Women make me promise that I come back and deliver the pics personally and I have to promise that I will have lunch with them 😉
It was
a truly magical experience. If you ever come to India. Do yourself a favor. Have time to make a friend and let them show you around. It is easier to say than to do so, as usually tourists gets swarmed by touts and vendors, but once you go with the flow everything is easy. I hope you will enjoy the pics : )
Miután elhagytam a Chennai-i reptér légkondicionált épületét, a hő mellbevágott. Az első fél órában nehezemre esett a légzés a páradus 38 fokos levegőben.
Mivel a vállam leégett s bőröm épp a felhólyagosodás stádiumában leledezett úgy döntöttem a vonat és busz kombináció helyett a taxit választom.
A mellettünk levő utca zajos a szomszédos árvaházak kis lakosainak csivitelésétől. Mamallapuramban 180 gyereket hagyott árván a Tsunami...
Felnőttek játszanak, a gyerekekkel kik hangosan nevetnek, viccelődnek.
