Geo: 26.2816, 73.0232 Up early for 8am departure to tour Jodhpur. Visit white marble mosque, Jaswat Thada. Stunning marble with view to Fort, shoes off. Then to Merangah (Majestic) Fort, up the lift to upper palaces with stunning chambers & rooms. Most chambers are original or renovated, so stunning. Plenty to see including pinjas (elephant saddles) & parasanes (seats carried for royalty). Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated 410 feet above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. We found this fort the best we have visited mostly because the rooms were so lavish and had plenty of original furniture & features. Then to quick lunch, pizza & fries, Rob still taking it easy. After lunch visited a Textile warehouse, exquisite bed coverings & scarves. Purchased some Doona Covers here ... read more

Geo: 26.2816, 73.0232 Rob bit better today after laying low yesterday. Off early again across the desert for Jodhpur. Long bumpy ride with 1 stop. Arrived hotel after 2pm, WelcomHotel, good sized rooms with king bed.Quick lunch and afternoon Village Safari by Jeeps to watch opium water demo at old villager's home. Quite interesting to see how the farmers live with large family in single room home. Also cowshed out back with milking cow. Then back on Jeeps to Khichan bird sanctuary, demoiselle cranes migrate from Siberia, spent 45 mins here whilst sun setting, quite interesting. Back in the Jeeps for a bumpy ride to a pottery to watch a young potter at work. By now its dark, so crazy drive by Jeep back to hotel for late dinner. Jodhpur is located at the edge of the Thar desert and is one of the bigger cities in the province of Rajasthan. It is called the "sun city" because of the ridiculous amount of clear days this city had during the year. The five hour bus ride I had from Jaisalmer was hilarious. People were crammed onto the bus and literally several would sit right in the isle. I'm getting used to the new meaning of personal space here in India. When the bus finally did arrive in Jodhpur, I had no idea where the hell I was. I tried to negotiate with a rickshaw to get me where I needed to go, but that isn't easy when you have no idea where the hell you are. So I guess I probably got ripped off but ... read more

And so, another day another train. This train had been going since 8 o'clock the previous night so we were surprised that it was only showing as an hour late when we checked it from Pushkar. It was also showing that it was only going to be 5 minutes late when it got to Ajmer so we set off as planned. There was no paper chart up at the station which is how they normally show where people have been allocated places on the train but H had received a message that we were to be in coach 12. When the signs came up to show where each coach was going to stop (the trains are very long!) none of the numbers matched with that or the air-conditioned first class sleeper (there are no ordinary seats ... read more

14-17 November 2015 - Jaisalmer staying at Fort Raywada Palace & to Jodhpur staying at Pal Haveli After seeing the Rat Temple, we depart for Jaisalmer (350kms), out into the Great Indian Desert. As we went back through Bikaner it took an hour or so to get out of the bustle of the morning crowd. As it is 'winter' and therefore cooler (28 degrees), many Indians holiday at this time so it has been more busy than usual, so our guide told us. Jaisalmer is known as the gold city because of the colour of the rock that the city of 60,000 is built from. This town is 70 kms from the Pakistan border so 20% of the population is of armed forces. The road was OK, other than severe speed bumps in towns and either ... read more

We arrived in Jodhpur after a very enjoyable train journey. We got a tuk tuk with no difficulties and were greeted by a lovely man and his family at the guesthouse we were staying at for the next 2 nights. After a long lie, we decided to walk to Mehrangahr Fort. Our guesthouse was situated in the old town famously called 'The Blue City'. The buildings are painted a lovely colour of blue, however the reason is disputed among Indians so we aren't really sure why. The streets are narrow and lead you past open doorways where you can peak into family homes. Mehrangahr Fort runs an audio tour which we paused a lot to sit and enjoy drinks in the cafe because it was pretty tough walking around in the desert heat, these breaks often ... read more

Perched on top of a hill and seemingly growing out of the red rocky terrain it was hard to tell where the red fort started and when the red sandstone mountain ended. The fort here was really remarkable. It stood out as a sign and reminder of power, royalty and the kingdom of Jodhpur to the people below. Before the fort let’s take it back to our arrival. After booking and catching an overnight bus from Udaipur to Jodhpur (7hours) sleeping or trying to in some dark and not very comfortable cubicles we arrived in Jodhpur at 3:30am. Great. The negotiation with the rickshaw driver was luckily a quick one. It was night, we were tired and they must have been to. We happily paid a little more given the time of night, but did not ... read more

I woke up the next morning still feeling off colour and decided to not tour Jodhpur with Brandon and Tayla. I decided some time in bed might do me good. I had breakfast on the roof, admiring the view of theBlueCity in the distance before retreating to the comfort of my bed for the day. I was still feeling quite homesick, but started freaking out about my change of heart the night before when I booked flights to go home early, and after deciding I could do this solo travel thing, I changed my flights back to a later date (another $150 down the drain)! I was feeling quite anxious and full of indecision but put it down to being off-colour. When Tayla and Brandon got back to the guesthouse late that afternoon they told me ... read more
