Thursday 6th November After spending a night in Bangalore, I caught a taxi (flat fee of 500 rupees), to the airport. Once I landed in Nagpur I was immediately assaulted by taxi and auto (3 wheels, 2 stroke vehicles) drivers. One taxi driver asked me for 700 Rs to which I just laughed at him and asked him if he was serious. I ended up taking an auto for 300 Rs (still way too much), to the Saurabh Hotel near the VCA cricket ground. The ride took about 40 minutes and it pulled up in front of the Heritage 2001 Hotel. This turned out to be the same hotel to which I suspected from my research on the Internet. The hotel had some pretty bad reviews but I went and had a look nevertheless. The room ... read more

We initially thought that at the beginning of the trip, we were in the midst of the Duwali festival. But, it later became ambiguous what festival this was. In Mumbai and Nagpur, we were told that it's Duwali but in Delhi, we were told that it was the Festival of Lights, and that Duwali is something else. In any event, the festival seemed to span about the first 7-8 days of our trip. That's one of the things about Hinduism that makes it so confusing for Westerners. There are enormous regional variations, and the same thing may have a different name in different places and different things may have the same name in other places. This is also true of the gods and goddesses. Hinduism is technically monotheistic ("Lord Brahma", at least in Delhi), but Hindus ... read more

I love India. I'm currently in Nagpur, a small town of about 2.1million people in the middle of India. I haven't yet seen the stone which indicates the exact geographical centre, but it's apparently only about 2km from the hotel I'm staying in. The monsoon rains started the day I flew into India, with mass flooding and a few deaths. This experience of India is incredibly different from when I was here in January for many reasons. India has again managed to teach me so much. Nagpur features about 1/2 a page in the Lonely Planet guide stating there's no real reason to visit Nagpur, which makes it great for someone like me. We are the only westerners I've seen here which creates a totally different experience from areas with a high tourist trade. I'm ... read more

The time has finally come for us to move on from Nagpur -the most normal Indian city we have visited so far. By normal I don’t mean at all that the last few weeks here have been a disappointment - in fact quite the opposite. By just being somewhere off the tourist trail (Napgur gets just one page in our lonely planet guide) you learn about what normal, everyday, Mr and Mrs India and their family get up to. I now know that many Nagpurians have Christmas carols as their mobile phone rings. I know that Army lorries are used here as school buses. I know that when stray dogs are hit by speeding 4X4’s, nobody reacts. I know that plumbers and electricians charge well under £1 for a couple of hours work, and if they’re ... read more
