It was quite difficult to find a quick and convenient way to get from Udaipur to Mumbai. All trains were fully booked. At the end we decided to take the overnight sleeper bus - a 16 hour journey in a bus with beds. We did not know exactly what to expect but thought this doesn't sound too bad and at least it is a direct connection. We got some warnings before (for example that people also call this the 'spine-breaker-trip') but we kind of ignored them as there was actually no alternative available any more except to fly, which we try to avoid as much as possible. What we actually got was worse than we ever thought and we would never make the same decision again.

The bus was fairly modern but it turned out that we got the upper sleeping cabin at the back of the bus (the first prize!). These cabins are really tiny, so that you can lie in them but it is impossible to sit upright. As everyone knows Indian roads can be very bumpy and are peppered with plenty of holes. With every bump - meaning literally every 10 seconds - we were thrown up into the air and landed shortly after again with a loud "ouch" on the thin mattress. The effect is especially bad when you are at the end of the bus far behind the axis. At the beginning we had a good laugh about it but after a restless night and 16 hours in the bus, when we were not even close to Mumbai, we got annoyed. After two more hours we finally arrived in Mumbai, still a long taxi ride away from our hotel. What a rip-off!

In the afternoon of the same day we got bad news via email and we decided to fly home the same evening for family reasons. We did not see much of Mumbai but we will never forget the journey to get there.

Es war wirklich schwierig eine schnelle und einigermassen vernuenftige Verbindung von Udaipur nach Mumbai zu finden. Alle Zuege waren ausgebucht. Schliesslich entschieden wir uns fuer einen Nachtbus - ein 16-stuendiger Trip in einem Bus mt Betten. Wir wussten nicht so ganz genau was uns da erwarten wuerde aber fanden, dass sich das nicht schlecht anhoert und ausserdem war es eine direkte Verbindung ohne Umsteigen. Leute haben uns zwar gewarnt (z.B. dass dies auch der 'Wirbelsaeulenbrecher-Trip' genannt wuerde) aber wir haben diese geflissentlich ignoriert da es ohnehin keine Alternative gab - ausser fliegen und das wollen wir ja so gut es geht vermeiden. Die Busfahrt war schlimmer als alles was wir erwartet hatten und wir wuerden es bestimmt kein zweites mal waehlen!

Der Bus war eigentlich ganz modern - allerdings hatten wir die letzte Kabine ganz hinten oben im Bus bekommen (der Hauptgewinn!). Die Kabinen sind ziemlich klein und man kann zwar ganz gut darin liegen aber niemals aufrecht sitzen. Und wie jeder weiss sind Indiens Strassen ziemlich holperig und gespickt mit Schlagloechern allererster Sahne. Mit jeder Unebenheit auf der Strasse - was bedeutet ungefaehr alle 10 Sekunden - wurden wir in die Luft gehoben um dann kurz darauf mit einem 'Autsch' unsanft wieder auf der duennen Matratze zu landen. Der Effekt ist besonders schlimm wenn man eben am Ende des Busses hinter der Axe sitzt bzw. liegt. Am Anfang haben wir noch drueber gelacht aber nach einer schlaflosen Nacht und 16 Stunden im Bus waren wir noch nicht einmal in der Naehe von Mumbai - wir waren genervt. Nach weiteren 2 Stunden wurden wir irgendwo im Norden von Mumbai 'ausgesetzt' - noch Meilen entfernt von unserem Hotel. Was fuer eine Abzocke!

Am Nachmittag dieses Tages haben wir per email leider schlechte Nachrichten erhalten und sind noch am selben Abend aus familiaeren Gruenden nach Muenchen zurueck geflogen. Von Mumbai haben wir nicht viel gesehen. Trotzdem werden wir unsere Reise dorthin sicher nie vergessen.
