Beaches in Kerala

Kovalam Beach : It is located 10 km from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) city, Kerala. Kovalam is a very famous beach resort all over the world. Since 1930's the international tourists, especially the Europeans, frequent the Kovalam Beach. Kovalam along with the crescent-shaped beaches bordered by coconut and palm trees makes for a splendid setting for a sun and sea bathing. The Lighthouse Beach is the southern most beaches and is popular among the tourists who spend most of their time at this beach. Life on Kovalam beach begins late in the day and continues till late at night.
Poovar Beach : It is Approximately 45 minutes drive from Kovalam. Poovar Beach separates the Neyyar River from the sea. Essentially a fishing village, it is a beautiful and unexplored beach resort. You can reach the Poovar Beach by water taxis only. The beach is not used for beach activities and water sports because of the fishing population. But Poovar beach can be visited to its peace and tranquility.
Beypore Beach : It is 10 km to the south of Kozhikode, Kerala. Beypore Beach is located at the mouth of the Chaliyar River. It was earlier famous for the Ship Building industry. Beypore was one of the most important port and fishing harbor of Kerala during ancient times. The place was an important trade and maritime center for merchants from Western Asia. Uru, the traditional Arabian trading vessel, was constructed at the boat-building yard of Beypore. Beypore also has a magnificent bridge built entirely of stone.
Marari Beach : It Is 12 km from Alleppey and 60 km from Cochin City. Marari Beach got its name from the local fishing village Mararikulam. It has long pristine sandy beaches where the swaying palms and majestic coconut groves add to the beauty of the beach. It is an ideal beach to be in peace and tranquility unlike the hush and rush of the city life. You will get a first hand experience of the local traditions, customs and hospitality of Kerala. Originally it was a small fishing village on the coast of Orissa. Now the place has been discovered as a perfect winter resort in India.
Bekal Beach : It is 2 Km from Kovalam City, Kerala. Bekal Beach is a small beach very near to Kovalam. It is famous for some of the very beautiful views of the sunset. The beach will provide you an insight into Kerala's coastal life. Bekal Beach is a fine example of amicable cultural ties among the Portuguese, Dutch and the local Kings in the pre-colonial era. The antiquity of the port can be made out from the ruins of some rock-cut temples.
Varkala Beach : It is 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) city, Kerala.Varkala attracts tourists not only for its beach resort but is also a famous pilgrim center. The beach is ideal holiday destination if you are on a look out for calmness and serenity. At Varkala beach, bask in the golden glory of the sun to get yourself a lovely copper tan. The mineral water of the hills is believed to possess medicinal properties. Varkala is known as the 'Southern Kashi' because of the 800-year-old Janardhana temple dedicated to Ayyapan and Hanuman.
Backwaters in Kerala
Kerala is most reputed for its undulating backwaters, which possibly does not have a match anywhere else. As many as forty-four rivers crisscross the land and finally drain into the Arabian Sea, creating a network of lakes, canals, estuaries and deltas. Backwater is a body of stagnant water connected to a river. The backwaters of Kerala- meandering inland lakes networked by canals - stretch to over 1900km. Boat across these tranquil stretches are an experience unique to Kerala. Large Kettuvalloms (traditional country crafts over 60ft. in length) have been converted into luxury houseboats for these cruises. Local Malayali people call it Kayals.
Wild lives in Kerala
A total area of 2,395.4 sq.km. has been brought under Sanctuaries and National Parks in Kerala. Total 12 Wildlife sanctuaries and 2 National Parks literally dot over the map of Kerala. In the thick forests of Periyar and Rajamala, you may chance upon elephants, gaur, sambar, deer, Nilgiri Tahrs, langur and a broad diversity of birds and reptiles.
Art and culture in Kerala
Kathakali dance form is one of the major tourist attractions in Kerala. Kathakali is the most well known dance drama from the south Indian state of Kerala. The word Kathakali literally means "Story-Play". It is known for its large, elaborate makeup and costumes. The elaborate costumes of Kathakali have become the most recognised icon for Kerala. The themes of the Kathakali are religious in nature. They typically deal with the Mahabarat, the Ramayana and the ancient scriptures known as the Puranas. This is performed in a text which is generally Sanskritised Malayalam. The dance shows revolve around religious themes and the form imbibe age-old martial arts of the region. Some other dance forms are Mohiniyattam. Elaborate make-ups and graceful physical gestures are feast to eyes.
Ayurveda in Kerala
The word "Ayurveda" is a tatpurusha compound of the word âyus meaning "life" or "life principle", and the word veda, which refers to a system of "knowledge". Thus "Ayurveda" roughly translates as the "knowledge of life". Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient system of health care that is native to the Indian subcontinent. Today, Ayurveda seems to have found a synonym in Kerala. The ancient medical science has been practised in India since times immemorial. Rare herbs with therapeutic qualities abound in the jungles of Kerala. They serve as fitting rejuvenation agent to your body and soul as an alternative to contemporary medical science.
