“Paithalmala thak paithal Chalke hi Jaana tha” We mounted up with this same attitude and the required preparations. However, I was a bit exhausted by climbing up for some distances. And it was the due support of my caring and loving husband that I got to reach the summit of the majestic hills of Paithalmala of Kannur in Kerala. He literally took me on his shoulders and walked along the peak. I had always mocked him for being an ardent fitness freak even though he is still that lean 6 feet tall guy. But I had to admit that he is indeed strong. Along with his muscular capacity, I think the place that we had been to on our very first trip together had played a very crucial role in making this new and impossible task possible. Well, it was nothing else, but carrying this entire 60 kg (that was me!) on his shoulders. Yes, the views around us too were arrested with all those misty clouds around us that were playing hide and seek with us.
Actually, we started from Delhi on a Saturday afternoon and boarded an afternoon flight and reached Kannur International Airport by late evening. The
cab driver-cum the tour guide of the tour company,
Dream Holidays that we went along with was already waiting for us just outside the building with the placard. Later on, in between the casual rapport with him, he said that it was a newly opened airport of
Kerala, on which we landed here
in Kannur district itself. And if it was not here, we would have been compelled to get down at either Cochin Airport or Mangalore International Airport. As our major destination was located in almost the same regions as that of Airport, we only had to travel for almost 1.5 hours to arrive at the resort at Paithal Mala, rather than venturing out to the main Kannur city.
Our stay at that beautiful resort perched alongside a cliff of the hilly region was almost like a dream on our entire
honeymoon trip. We were really surprised to see all those world-class facilities of the resort that could be availed at the
cheapest rates. We only had the time to take rest after having a wholesome dinner from the restaurant that comprised of traditional Kerala cuisine. Even though we were having them for the first time ever, we
instantly became huge fans of this spicy and hot flavour. We dozed off without taking much time as we were supposed to wake up early on the very next day. This particular activity included in our
packages was the one that excited us the most. It was nothing else, other than making tents at the hilltop and staying overnight in them!!
My husband was already awake when I opened my eyes. The views just outside our window were very refreshing, unlike the dusty and over-foggy mornings that we usually see in there in Delhi. We got ready together very delightfully, as both of us were in the best moods that we could ever be. Meanwhile, our guide accompanied us in the cab by which we were to travel from then on. Our guide had warned that it had rained the previous day, and so will the paths be wet and slippery. Their cab had taken us to the foothills of Paithalmala at where the entry point of the trek was.
We got to meet yet another North Indian couple who were honeymooning in
Kerala. They were actually on
tour at the entire state, majorly, Munnar, Alleppey and Kovalam. And this was their final destination and will be returning to Mumbai by next week. As we had instantly built a great rapport with the other couples, we were talking non-stop about our cravings for travelling more and exploring new destinations. Moreover, they shared their past travel experiences of this beautiful state
with us. We had their cool company on the following times of our trip. They hadn’t booked their trip by relying on any tour operators so had reached Kannur town by train. They said it was really hectic to reach Pottanpplavu from the Kannur city once crossing the small town of Taliparamabha. Thank god, we had booked our honeymoon
packages by this reliable tour company, or else, we too would have suffered.
Ah, anyways, we were continuing our walk after crossing the entry points amid the dense forests. We got to pay to heed the cries and other chirpings of small birds and squirrels jumping across the tall trees of the jungle paths. It was pretty evident that the biodiversity existing here is absolutely very rich with numerous flora and fauna inhabiting them. The only single drawback that I got to find here was that of the blood-drinking leeches. One among them had bitten me and I was bleeding. It was quite surprising to realize that they were not at all painful. Some other older traveller lady who passed our way said that it was rather good for your health to get bitten by them, as they would suck in only bad blood in your body. Or in other words, it was the automatic blood purification treatment, without paying a single
price. But, as ordered by our guide we sprayed ourselves with saltwater to further avoid their attack.
After approximately 2 hours of trekking (of which I had to trek only 1 hour, rest it was my caring husband who was burning the calories) we finally reached the hilltop. It was all greenery at over a large expanse of area. Never in my life had I seen such a beautiful sight. It is said that we could behold the view of the nearby Kodagu forests from the hilltop. Apart from the small deep green bushes in between, there was just nothing but the just the stunning bright green grassland kind of natural vegetation. We took many photos from this point. Further, we had a mutual understanding with the other couple as they clicked for us and us for them.
And finally, the tent was already set us at the spot by our tour operator. We had a small lunch packed by them in those adorable tents and relaxed the later times of the so peacefully at the hilltop. When it was evening, we got to experience a whole new version of the sun setting behind the hills of Paithalmala. Our tiredness had made us sleep the moment we settled in the tents on a chilly night. Henceforth, in every aspect, our honeymoon trip to this picturesque part of Kerala was indeed wonderful.
