7 January 2012 Before anybody mentions the spelling and punctuation, we are writing so much in the short time that we have, we don't always have time to proof read. Sorry! After an epic breakfast with Mithra (about seven courses of Indian food, including two sweet courses!) we are sent off on the bus back to Mangalore. It is an emotional farewell and as soon as Emily starts crying, me and Nicola follow! I hope this shows our hosts how much we have appreciated their hospitality. They have looked after us so well that I have already told my mum I want to stay here! To thank Mithra, I gave her some Kendal Mint Cake, a Cumbrian slate coaster and a postcard of Ullswater. I also left a letter and some Blackpool Rock for Geethra, my ... read more

After a very early start at Manchester, a short trip to Heathrow and five hours in Bangalore, we have arrived in Mangalore! We were waved off this morning by District Governor David Simpson and his wife Janet, who both came to wave us goodbye. Despite some heavy suitcases and too much hand luggage, we all made it here in one piece. My nerves were nowhere near as bad as I thought they would be and I managed to say goodbye to everybody without any tears! The first things that have stuck me are the amount of adverts in Bangalore airport for green and environmental initiatives. It seems naive but I didn’t consider that this would be a priority for people in India. Being in Bangalore still felt like being in an airport at home, except for ... read more

with some trepidation about landing on the hilltop in mangalore where sometime ago an air india flight had crashed, we arrived at mangalore airport, a newly built airport, collected our luggage and proceeded towards taj gateway. they offered us a choice of rooms and we were upgraded to a club room with a view of the arabian sea. we explored the hotel and discussed a day trip with travel desk. We arrived at the coffee shop and i chose a mangalore thali with the fish and chicken, my husband ordered a nasi goreng and after a little rest we left for sun and sand resort which was right on the beach. entry to the resort also came with snacks and we spent some time at the coffee shop overlooking the beach and viewed some of the ... read more

Hellooooooooooo, After leaving Fort Kochi we made our way back up into the hills to Munnar on the Western Ghats. At around 2000 Meters it was quite chilly again but so stunningly lush. A small town literally surrounded by rolling hills of bright green tea, rivers and forest. On both the couple of days that we spent there we managed to disappear into the surrounding hills breathing in that amazing clean, crisp air. From Munnar we headed down, back into Tamil Nadu to Pollachi where we sadly had to stay a little longer that expected due to me eating some dirty rice, getting another bonus sickness for a few days. Chistof was so good to me though feeding me plenty of cheap tasting chocolate eclairs so i was soon on the mend and we on our ... read more

Geo: 12.8694, 74.8426A home stay in India is a must, and where we were headed was the Varnum homestay located about 15 km outside of Manathavady in the state of Wayanad. We arrived at about 2pm and were immediately welcomed with some lunch. The mother and father of the homestay where both busy during they day. Beena the wife was attending a week long yoga course and Vargese the husband had spent all day driving his son 400km to another place to study, he ended up getting back at 4 am, but was up before us in the morning.Once we settled in we took a walk around the property which have rice fields and banana plantations, we went a bit further into some bush land with a few trails.Along the way we noticed some big poo ... read more

As we've moved down the country we've seen a big change in landscapes and crops. From cotton to rice-paddies, to hillsides of tea bushes and coffee, and crops of root veg and now the more tropical outline of banana plants and palm trees. Finally we arrived at the coast and first stop is Kochi in Kerala and we opted to head for Fort Cochin which is one of the small islands just off the mainland. It doesn't feel very much like India with it's blend of Portuguese, Dutch and English heritage. India's oldest European style church is here along with a Synagogue, a thriving Jewish community (all centred around a place called Jew Town, which doesn't sound very pc to me!) and a port with cantilevered Chinese fishing nets - it's a right old hotch-potch, but ... read more

Hello this is Ali writing from India! sorry its taken so long to write but we've been busy exploring this land of love! true to the rumours india is the craziest country you will ever come across. every aspect of it is categorized into extremes, it is extremely poor and extremely rich, it is dirtier than you could ever imagine in some places (which includes rats running between your legs) and spot clean in others, some towns are disgustingly ugly and others, well most of the country, are the most beautiful places and settings i can't even put them into words. its fast and slow, your either really pissed off or really high on life, its crazy and hectic but also the most peaceful but no matter what you can not find an in between. you ... read more

Jamalabad -- Heaven in clouds Well, this is my travel blog, in fact first blog ever. So, bear with me.I am going to blurt out everything here. We had a long weekend ahead of us due to Independence day and my friend Sathish was going home for weekend. Sainath & I accompanied him. Ramdas who was also on his way home also joined us in the journey. On the way to his home in Venoor, we noticed in the Ujire circle that 'Jamalabad Fort' was about 9 kms away. So, our first plan of action after reaching home was to plan to go that fort the very next day. We started early the next day. Satish, his brother Praveen(Our hosts), Sainath & I started at about 9'o clock and reached Ujire at about 10'o clock. ... read more

Train journey to Managlore, another large city we did not intend to spend long in - booked in to a very comfortable hotel (still only 20 quid a night) and were promptly marooned there by heavy rain. Would have liked to explore the city a bit, but with the mud and general decrepit look of the place stayed in the hotel mainly watching telly, and me indulging in a facial and haircut which cost all of 5 pounds (being on the road for three months plays havoc with the appearance). Ken got his hair cut here - same sort of style his mum probably made him have at the start of a new school term. It's growing out now. To reach the hill stations we took an overnight sleeper for the 10 hour journey to Coimbatore, ... read more

We woke up in our 'suite' to find a monstrous spider lurking in the corner. We are talking the size of my hand!! We also found web trailing accross the rope that Mark and Dale had used to string up their mozzy nets. We went out to find breakfast, no easy task it seemed! After walking for ages we found a restaurant that served food and sat down. Looking through the menu we found to our surprise that although food was available there was nothing to drink apart from alcohol! not even a bottle of water, and it was 9 in the morning! We left and found somewhere else. We then hopped onto the 2.30 train from Mangalore to Calicut which was great, only took five hours and the views were amazing. We got off the ... read more
