We arrived in the Spiti Valley area in the hopes of doing some trekking. On the bus on the way here we were lucky to meet Ralf, an amiable and eccentric German trekking guide who spends 6 months of the year in the Himalayas. He told us every detail we needed to do a five day trek from Dhangkar to Kaza, which required no guide or tent as we would walk to a different village each day. Day1: Kaza - Dhangkar The 9am bus, which sometimes leaves by 10am dropped us at the start of a path to our first day's destination of Dhangkar. The path is steep but cuts several kilometers off the winding road route. The uphill hike is short and only takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Being new to the altitude ... read more

Important disclaimer: This write up has been done without thought to structure and has been written in little pieces every evening. Moods have not been compensated for. It should not be taken as a definitive guide to the trip described but rather as a description of the trip by a fifteen year old on a holiday with his parents. Throughout the trip, there have been mood changes and many omissions of things thought unimportant by the writer but may be important for the traveler to know. Minor grammatical and factual changes have been made by the parents but not enough to deviate from the main theme of this write up. That said, read on… One day my dad told me that he might be going to Leh with my uncle (his brother). I was quite excited ... read more

As summer approaches, and the plains heat up, the season for Himalayan treks begin. Usually most of the well-known treks in the Garhwal, Kumaon, Himachal regions are accessible between the months of May to September. Since May we were ready to hit the trail as soon as any of them become accessible. The information from the Himachal tourism office in Manali confirmed that Rohtang pass, gateway to the Lahaul-Spiti region, would be opened up around May 15. This date usually varies depending on the severity of the last winter. We were advised to plan any trip not before June first week. So it was - we planned our trek to Chandratal lake on the first weekend of June. Bharat flew in from Bangalore, and from Delhi four of us were there - Nilanjan, Dipanjan, Himanshu and ... read more

I'm now in Kaza, a remote location in the N.W. Indian Himalaya. It's so remote that it takes 12 hours by bus to travel only 200 kilometers from Manali. The views were terrifying, we crossed one mountain pass from the rain shadow side to the arid region I'm in now. The dirt roads were rained out in places on the switch-backs, and accommodate two-way traffic. We passed two wrecked cargo trucks, from the looks of them they fell down the mountain. No guard rails. I'm leaving today at 4:30 for Mud (pronounced "Mood") but mud is all I really expect to find there, as it is even more difficult to reach. Kyle, Jake and I are going to trek down Pin Valley and over Baba pass. We hooked up with two guys from the South and ... read more

I somehow managed to drag myself at the train station 15 minutes before 6 but I won't lie and say it was painless. The bed was very comfy and it required all my willpower not to fall back to sleep. I asked around at the bus station for where the bus to Kaza was and everybody gave conflicting answer so for 15 mintues I was just walking around trying to find my bus. Then I found it. Apparently it left in Kullu, about 1 hour south. This meant that almost all the seats were taken already. The only seat left was at the very very end. I figured it wouldn't be too bad, the journey was just 11 hours anyway. That was a mistake. A major one. The ride was smooth at first but the smoothness ... read more

Road Tripping in Kinnaur & Spiti After relaxing in Dharamsala we needed a bit more action, therefore arriving at Manali and hearing about the Kinaur & Spiti tour sounded just the perfect option. While Kinnaur is a green valley rich of vegetation, Spiti valley is a high desert in the Himalayas. During winter it is totally cut off from civilization incurred by the snow blocking the road passes. Ancient Buddhist culture, similar to nearby Tibet, exists in the region which is part Himachal Pradesh - one of the least populated states in India. The roads are terrible, dusty and bumpy, traverse over precipice cliffs and high passes need to be crossed - hair-raising experience, no doubt. Although public transportation is available, it's not frequent nor comfortable, so we hired a jeep plus driver for 10 days ... read more
