Me and my friend went to Ahmadabad especially to see the ‘fabric city of India’. Later we found that there is much more to see. But because of the time we choose only Ahmadabad city and Pavgadh. (The place which Champaner monuments situated) We had long journey of four and half hour from the capital of Gujarat. Champaner is an ancient fort located at the foothills of Pavagadh. The town derives its name from the Champa tree or from Champaraj founder of the town, a contemporary of King Vanraj Chavda of Anhilwada. When we reach there we realize the culture of Gujarath people. Mostof the people are really nice and they never try to cheat on us for the price (except hostel but we managed to bargain) Jami Masjid is one of the finest examples of ... read more

If you are in the city of Ahmedabad, do not miss out on visiting Sabarmati Riverfront. It’s a promenade on both the banks of the River Sabarmati. A long stretch to stroll , a good place to spend time & Unwind self. The riverfront is perhaps the most divergent place in the city. I visited this place in August 2012.The view of riverfront, from the bridges over the river is well formed. It gives a panoramic view of the riverfront & the city as well. The riverfront gets illuminated post dusk and one can see the Photostat of the lights in the calm waters of the river. It is a peaceful & pleasing place. Adding some information: A good place to hang out. One can get close to the nature in middle of the concrete city. ... read more

The dreaded sleeper train was absolutely fine. Quite fun in fact. I was nervous when I arrived at the station, no idea where to go and even though I had a good 45 minutes before the departure time the manic and chaotic station made me feel panicky and rushed. A very helpful man named Amit was travelling on the same train as me. However he had purchased the 1stclass ticket and was quite shocked when he saw my second class sleeper. He helped me find my bed and made sure everything was fine and then he went to his carriage, he gave me his number and came to see me during the journey. I really appreciated his help. I was in a small open compartment made up of 6 beds – 3 on either side, lower ... read more

Last time I took a road trip was in India. I ventured from the state of Goa (south of Mumbai) up through the cities, villages and vastness, across mountains and deserts to Jaisalmer (borders with Pakistan). Along the way I was filled with wonder. Photo from the Past: Spotted this woman from a building across the way and found her beautiful.... read more

Oh, Wow! What a day! First, our "interview" was successful and we were given the documentation that we will need this evening to leave India. Then, one of the women was enlisted to apply mendhi (henna) to my hands. I decided to go all out and so even my finger tips are covered. I couldn't touch anything for nearly two hours and then could allow the henna to fall off as it dried, but still could not put water to my hands until this morning. Then, we had our final party. Bill gave a magnificent speech! He named each woman in our project and said something specific about her particpation. Ilaben translated. I could see that each person was waiting with baited breath to hear what he would say, and he did justice to each and ... read more

When we returned to the AWAG production facility Wednesdeay afternoon the women were eager to show us all they had done during our absence. Wow! they completely finished nine quilts .. piecing, quilting and binding. About six of them were certainly saleable as first class goods. Madina had even found a way to quilt the Chinense Coin quilt with sine-wave stitching. We took photos of all the quilts. Everyone, including us was pleased. Soon everyone began changing into their finest saris and kurties in preparation for our farewell party. The women made arrangements for Marie to have Mehndi (henna) applied to her hands. I must say, I love Indian women's fashion. Raven hair, supple limbs, and flowing silks in so many colors with sequins, mirrors, embroidery to add sparkle to it all. Everyone was in a ... read more

Today, Tuesday, we went back to the Shaibau Police headquarters to turn in the color copies of our passports, proof of Ilaben's residence and letters stating what we did while in India. Oops, after waiting to meet with the assistant commissioner we learned that both of us required copies of the same ducuments, i.e. Ilaben's gas bill, her passport, etc. so off we went to a shop to make copies. to waWe returned to the Police Headquarters for the fourth time armed with fresh Xerox copies of everything. Each of now had 21 pages of documents, seven passport sized photos and our passports. "Finally we've got everything." Wrong! the beauraucrat now handed us another form and imformed us that we must return with the new form on Wednesday and wait to be interviewed. We learned that ... read more

Although we are still not cleared to leave (check Bill's blog for those hassles), we are entering the "countdown" in anticipation. Do you remember the music concert in memory of a man's father that I wrote about earlier? Well, Tuesday (tonight) was another concert, this time of popular film (mostly Bollywood). Interesting concept: really good singers signing popular music with the films from which the music is taken is shown behind the singers. The concert is in honor of two boys entering Brahmin adulthood...well, they get a white string that they are to wear (although many do not) but it appears to be similar to a confirmation, bar mitzvah, etc. Two boys in the same family: three separate events. The concert was held in an 800-seat auditorium, nearly full, assigned seating! I wore my art silk ... read more

We first met Shiva in 2000. On a scholarship to study organizing and social work at Boys Town in Omaha, as a SERVAS visitor, he visited our home in David City, NE several times, often when I was teaching real estate out-of-town. Here is his story: When he was 15, his mother gave him 50 hard-earned and saved rupees. He walked 12 days to an education in Kathmandu and his life's purpose. At one time, he was an advocate (lawyer), but he left that behind to have the freedom to work for peace and freedom, and to bring enrichment to Nepali villages. He has been honored by Amnesty Internation and the Friendship Force, and has been active in SERVAS. A few years ago, he presented a 3-day course at a Japanese college. A year later, 20 ... read more

The Log Cabin Quilt is the one that everyone is lining up to buy. The BEST one! My friend Annette told me several times, "get Eleanor Burns' book "Quilt in a Day" or something like that. I found a used copy and two days before we left, Bill figured out a log cabin quilt, assembly style, and that is what we left Meena stitching when we left for Kathmandu. After admiring all of the other quilts, we needed to arrange the 100 squares. I was content to do a simple one, but NOT MALINI. She was determined that we would make the most difficult one, and we did. See the photo. Isn't it amazing at the progress in just 10 days or so. We discussed that 300 or more squares could be made, quickly, production-style, and ... read more
