Question - What is there to do in Shenzhen when you have a week off work but haven't had your first pay check?
Answer - Plenty!
I have had my first holiday - a whole seven days off. I had no money but did I let that stop me? No. I took time to explore the city and spend time with new friends.
One day six of us went to Dameisha beach resort. The Irish, Destry, Val, Dawn and myself. You would think going to the beach wouldn't cause many problems but trust me it did. We were stared at constantly, people took our pictures (with and without asking), we even saw a body bag - that had nothing to do with us though!
It can be flattering when you catch someone staring at you, it can also be annoying and when it's everybody on a packed beach it is definitely annoying. All six of us were being stared at no matter what we were doing. I'm pretty sure we may have given a few people heart attacks when we started putting suntan lotion on each others backs. Yes I'm sure they stare because we're white and
in bikinis but they could be less obvious about it. Same with the photo taking, its nice someone wants your photo but at least ask or do it secretly. Pointing a camera directly at us is pretty obvious. One girl out asked if she could take a photo of us - just us, not with her just a photo of our group, she asked politely of course we agreed, but only if she took a photo with us.
Another day a group of us went to Chiwan Tianhou Temple and Museum; a beautiful but small temple in Chiwan.
The temple was built in 1420 and is a temple for the Goddess Tianhou, the Goddess of the Sea. She is worshipped by sailors and Fishermen across south-east Asia. Tianhou herself was apparently born in 960AD and lived off the coast of China. She was an excellent swimmer and saved her brother from drowning during a typhoon. The legends say she either died finding her fathers body or flew from the mountain tops to join the Gods. There are more them 1500 temples dedicated to her in 26 different countries.
There were two days when I went to Lianhuashan Park.
A park close to home where Destry had been and recommended. The park has lakes for fishing and peddle boating. There are fields for picnics and kite flying, pagodas, hills, gym equipment, steps that looked like the lead up to the clouds and lots of walking paths. One time I went to the park it was for a run. I arrived at the park pretty early, it would be way too hot soon, it was already pretty busy considering the time. I started my run and it was going really well until I found myself on the floor and not just on the floor but skidding along the floor on my stomach like the Penguins in Mary Poppins. It took me a moment to realise what had happened. A child on a plastic scooter had crashed into me sending me flying, the child then carried on scooting like nothing had happened. Meanwhile I'm a mess on the floor, bleeding from more than one place, bruises already forming and aching. After getting up and assessing myself I carried on with a slow and gentle walk through the park until finding the closest metro and going home.
Destry and I spent an afternoon
at Dafen art village. The art village is an area of Dafen that is just street after street of stalls selling art. Some of the art is original, some are copies, some are just prints but there is so much of it. As well as selling the pictures there are shops selling art supplies, a museum and cafes.
Finding thing to do in Shenzhen with no money is not a problem - there is plenty on offer.
