Student Live
Hey Guys! So it’s been a while since I wrote my last entry but now it’s time again for a little update on what I’m up to . In this Blog I will describe my life at the Uni at my trip to Guangdong.
After coming back from Hong Kong I spend the last two weeks with my Chinese Host family before I would move out to the University dorms. At that time I also met Romain, a French guy who had also been living in the same living area as I did and who would attend the same university as I would next semester ( Again it is JiLin DaXue Zhuhai Xueyuan). With him I spend most of my free time before picking up the kids from school. After two weeks it was time to say goodbye to my Host family (for the time being of course, my uni is still in the same city.)
On the next day I moved into my Dorm at the Uni. The Building is on the Southgate of the University, just about 2 Minutes away from a small city outside of the Uni which offers a variety of restaurants,
bars, KTV, Snooker and Majiang Places. There are about 400 People living in our Dorm, with about 100 of them being Exchange Students. The Majority of the Foreigners are Koreans, with only Dima, Romain, me, two Swedish Guys and three Japanese not being Korean.
After moving into the Dorm with my roommate Dima I quickly found out that the Bed at the Uni was even harder than the one at my Host family’s home…. It took me a great amount of sleepless nights before I could get used to it. On the next day we had our entry exams to determine what class we could get into. Since I was super lazy during the break and didn’t study a lot, I was kind of nervous but luckily still managed to get into the HSK 5 class together with Dima.
My class now has about 25 Students (last year I only had 6) and I have 10 * 1 1/2 hour classes a week which leaves enough time for studying and socializing ( and playing LOL , i made the mistake to introduce Dima and Romain to it, so now they want to go play everyday ...... )
During the next weeks I got to know a lot of my class and school mates. Compared to last year, where I had to back to my Host family’s home at 4 and therefore couldn’t make many friends, I now finally have enough time to do so. Besides going to my classes or studying in the library, I often go to the South Gate with friends to try out the great variety of restaurants. Whether it is Huo Guo (fire pot), ma la tang (spicy soup), Japanese Sushi or Taiwanese Rice, everything is cheap and Tasty.
Last week I accompanied a Chinese friend (Kevin) to his Hometown Dongguan. Dongguan with its 8+ Million people is one of the major Export cities in China. After an 3 hours bus ride we arrived at 9 in the city and directly went to have a second Dinner with Kevin’s Dad. During my stay in Dongguan we visited a couple of famous Garden and Shopping Malls. Since Kevin and his Dad are both seriously interested in Bodybuilding we not only hit the gym but also had towns of delicious Guangdong food.
On the last day of my stay was the so called
Friends
Romain, Uliko and Dima qing ming jie (Tomb Sweeping Day) where the deceased are honored and their tombs are cleaned. This comes along with burning fake money and other stuff (like shoes or clothes) so that the deceased could have those items in their afterlives. So on that day I went to meet up with Kevin’s whole family to have lunch, drink tea and in the end to burn some fake money. Kevin had warned me beforehand that the ceremony was always very loud and with a lot of smoke, and he didn’t lie. On the Graveyard where dozen of families cleaning the tombs of the ancestors while burning fake money and firing fire crackers which resulted in a huge smoke cloud covering the graveyard.
Experiencing this way of honoring the deceased, which is so greatly different than the one in the west, was truly interesting.
After finishing the ceremony we said goodbye to Kev’s family and took the bus back to Zhuhai.
For now I’m preparing for my Mid-Term exams next week and my working on my further traveling Plans.
As always, thanks for reading, don’t forget to check out the pictures below and feel free to leave me
