It's a tough job...It's a tough job...It's a tough job...

...but someone had to do it. And Roel volunteered. Little did he know how dangerous it could be!
Ho-ho-ho!

And as you can see, much 'ho-ho-hoing' was in order for Roel (aka Santa) at his Xuhui campus last week! Poor guy...he's getting a way too thin for that role...and besides, as it turned out his audience of preschoolers nearly mobbed him in their eagerness to get the goodies of candies!! If the older kids were somewhat more bemused than amused at his playing the jolly ol' Saint, apparently still a good time was had by all.

As far as Xmas goes in Shanghai, there is a real heart-felt attempt at replicating the season everywhere, but until Christopher's arrival we were feeling that maybe it's just not possible to have a real down-home Xmas without the snow and turkey gravy and Xmas cake and Bing Crosby...after all, its those little things that count. And Christopher brought them all! Thanks everyone -- but especially Chris, for making the 14 hour trek on Air Canada.

Speaking of which, Chris as you can see was initially coping with a healthy dose of jetlag...but he quickly rebounded (despite an emergency root canal...but we'll save details on that to the next blog) and thanks to a quick trip to the local bike

store, and his extra set of arms and bike carrier, we were able to invade the 'Xmas street' and haul back enough booty to decorate the apartment. So Christopher, along with his hefty assortment of prezzies, chocolates and goodies has brought the Xmas spirit to Shanghai for us!! (Oh, and we discovered where to get Baileys, too...:-)

So we'll be bringing in Xmas day with a brunch at "New Heights", where we'll sit on the deck overlooking the bund and the Shanghai harbour (remember blog #2? 3?) and enjoying the vista and warm temperatures before heading back for our turkey-to-go with all the trimmings! If we're not talking to you on Xmas day, please accept our wishes for a wonderful holiday. We'll be certainly having fun introducing Chris to all our favorite haunts, while waiting for Sylvia to join us after Chris meets her in Hong Kong.

So, Merry Xmas one and all from Shanghai!

And Xin Nian Kuai Le (Gong Hei Fat Choy!!)

Love,
Amy and Roel

Shanghai is open for business...as all these old buildings -- once, no doubt, built for less commercial pursuits -- are now filled to the brim with happy shoppers.

merry christmas
Hi you three, merry chistmas, i told carly today that we missed your yams at dinner, hope your all jolly, heres Carrie, well, I'm finally looking at your blog. Can you believe it? We have eaten non stop for two days and now we're here, at Marth's practically comatose.... It was great talking to you today. Carly called tonight just after we finished eating. She sounded like her usual upbeat self. We hadn't opened her gifts at that point, but she sent some really cute goodies. Anyway it's very interesting looking at the photos of your Shanghai home, work and all. Before long I'll be there with you. Here's Lauren......Hey there you three....It is not 910 on Christmas night, and we just finished dinner and opening presents and it was definently not the same without the famous sweet potatoes of Amy! I hope that you guys had a great Christmas and that you have a great Canadian New Year! Lots of love and maybe someday my mom and I can venture on that long plane trip over the Pacific to see you guys. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Lots of love, Lauren

School break?
Hi Amy and Roel, I'm happy to read that Chris made it for Christmas! Do you have time off from school for the holidays? I'm afraid I know very little about the educational system/calendar in China. We certainly enjoyed our Thanksgiving with 2 Craigs and Carly, her first as an American!
