Mount Everest
Qomolangma (सगरमाथा) or Chomolungma
"Mother of the Universe" Lhasa, 23rd Oct 06, Monday; Tibet via Chengdu, 20th Oct 06 Friday Solo
What's there to be said about Tibet has already been said many times. I had delayed this trip for far too long...the unique culture and its authencity this place must have in the past is now replaced with heightened commercialism and fake monks running amok in its city circuit. This is just so sad. Nevertheless, if you get away from the hustle and bustle of Lhasa city proper, I believe this place can still move.
Firstly, the 3 days 2 nights train ride from Chengdu to Lhasa. It's something that I'll probably do again if I ever go back to Tibet. We all know that there must be some un-explored places in this world, untouched by mankind, beautiful as it is. On this train, towards the highest point of the ride, when everything out there was covered with pristine white snow, you tend to want to stare. And this nothingness is extremely beautiful.
En-route to the all-almighty Everest, I was down with a fever. All I remembered was feeling freaking sleepy, miserable and extremely thirsty. They said it was the onset of altitude sickness...don't know
and didn't care. All I remembered wanting was coke. Slept my way through in the jeep and guzzled plenty of carbonated drinks and somehow, problem solved. Don't ask me how's that possible but it did. And due to this, I missed out on one full day of sceneries and terrains that must be beautiful...I was also not (very) prepared for the extreme cold and thought of giving up and returning back to Lhasa...I was and am glad I didn't. Personally, this trip is memorable not only because of the surreal sceneries but more of the arduousness in getting to the various destinations.
And, I must mention en-route to Everest...beautiful is extremely mild an adjective to use as description... I don't remember much of the sacred mountain but what I do remember clearly is the icy wind howling, the out-of-this-world himalayan views and the dried blood on my cracked lips.
