Today, we USAC students took a bus trip to the ancient town of Luodai, which is about an hour away from Chengdu. And on the way, I (for the first time) got to see some of China's rural areas! I'm definately planning on visiting some remote villages when I go to Guilin (southern China) during the New Year break. Most of the houses were very old, and surrounded by beautiful wet red dirt, vegetables ... Read Full Entry

Luodai is famous for its drainage system that runs through the streets. Before, it was used for waste and drainage.

Guilin
I think if you are looking for something which is NOT touristy you need to avoid Guilin and surrounding area. It is very beautiful but unfortunately completely geared towards tourists, Westerners and Chinese, backpackers and tour groups. I think a better option is the Guizhou and Hunan provinces. The capital cities in both (Guiyang and Chansha) see very few tourists. In Hunan you can visit the cute Phoenix (Fenghuang) town in Hunan, touristy but tourists are mainly Chinese and the neighbouring town Jishou (which I visited briefly) should be a nice place to visit, with guaranteed no tourists. In Guizhou you can travel out from Guiyang into the countryside and visit both "normal" villages, and minority villages, some of which are interesting, some are turned into spectacles. It is easy to get from Chengdu to these areas.
