We fLew Hong Kong, Guangzhou to Xi'an......the airport very new & modern. Global Volunteer leader, HuDi, met us at airport & took us to our hotel......Gaosu Shenzhou Hotel (Sino Pearl Hotel) which is across from the 'WALL' The WALL is 400 yrs old, 30' high & 12' thick, built by the Ming Dynasty. All in all, there were 13 dynasties in China. The city has a bell tower & a drum tower, which was built when Buddhism had been introduced to the area. The old city of Xi'an lies within the 'WALL', however, the city has grown & spread way beyond the wall. There are gate houses at each gate, & there are at least 6 gates. The gates and WALL are lit up at night & are quite stunning. There is a lovely park around the wall, which follows the moat. People are doing Thai Chi at 6 am, walk the park all day long & at night a local band comes in & they all dance.....Xi'an is the oldest city of Shaanxi Province -- it was the end of the silk road. It is a modern city, our hotel very comfortable, with good dining rooms, HEAT & plenty of
hot water ! Since it is winter/spring here, the days are cool but show signs of warming up. There are over 1,000 colleges & universities in this city....There is a Catholic Church & Christian church in the city. We attended the Christian church on Sunday -- there were approx 550 attending the second service of the day! Many were standing, some were sitting outside on benches & we were ushered upstairs into another building where we watched the service on a TV screen.....many young people were there, along with many families & young children. It was a beautiful sight. The service was all in Chinese, a women pastor gave the sermon. We wandered into the book store & found bibles & many books on Billy Graham & also THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE. It was another nice experience.
