After doing all his internet research, Tom chose two towns that were hard to get to on public transportation: Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang. To get to Z (my abbreviation), we had to take two trains and travel (for 20 hours) about three-quarters of the way around a circle of cities in southern middle China. Fenghuang

Definitely the most beautiful old Chinese city we saw.

Armor

Made of straw, it might help prevent bruises, but stood next to the cannon. Don't think it would have helped.

Wooden Weapons

Yes, Tom got me to do this too.

Fenghuang River

The townspeople aren't happy about the invasion of tourists -- I don't blame them.

Father and Daughter

We met them on the river -- isn't she cute?

Trash Disposal

She skims it off the water and he burns it on the bank.

Water Wheel

Originally a mill for rice -- I think!

Laundry

Yes, he's washing the sheets from your hotel.

Veggie Prep

Yes, she's washing the veggies for your lunch. (That's why they tell you to always eat cooked vegetables.)

Riverside Homes

They've been located on this river for hundreds of years.

Guesthouses

Full of tourists, and (I imagine) a little damp sometimes.

Tom and ANOTHER Friend

He'll smoke anytime he's offered a bong -- always rough tobacco.
