For Spring Break we got a package deal which included round trip tickets and 4 nights at the Holiday Inn at Yalong Bay (a 5-star Hotel…no sarcasm) for $500US. Since our entire trip was taken care of by an agency, we did not run into any problems during our vacation. Our stay in Sanya was the definition of “chill”. Our group included Silas, Rochelle, Samantha, Josh, and me. On our way to Pudong Airport, Silas and I decided to take the Maglev, a train that operates by magnets and travels at 300km/hr. We arrived in Sanya where we were picked up by a driver to take us to the hotel. Our hotel was located at Yalong Bay along a beach, but it was a little far from the main city. To get into the main city, we would have to take a taxi which costs 50RMB. Our days consisted of waking up, going to the pool, going to the beach, and eating (so this blog is going to be short). In Sanya, the temperature was around 80 degrees F with 87% humidity, so it was HOT. On one of the nights we went into town to eat dinner at a seafood
restaurant which was recommended to us by one of the staff members at the hotel. The restaurant was located at a corner next to thed beach. On the bottom floor of the restaurant are a series of tanks in which customers can pick what kind of seafood they want to eat. One of my favorite memories was when a catfish and a group of eel feel out of a net and were bouncing around on the floor. They were instantly beaten with a stick on the ground in front of a small child. The child's mother did not look happy. The fish that we picked fell out of the net after it was caught and landed on the floor. It was also beaten with a stick on the floor. I asked the attendant if we could get a different fish because we found that a little disgusting. We ended up eating the fish and it was tasty.
On our last day in Sanya, Silas and I decided to go into town and hit golf balls. I taught him how to swing and he made good progress. Surprisingly I still have my solid swing. We decided to take a motorcycle taxi
back to the hotel because it’s a little bit cheaper than taking a regular taxi and we thought it would be a good experience. Silas and I flagged down a motorcyclist and we both hopped onto the motor bike. It was my first time riding a motorcycle, so I was a little nervous, but after a while it was not so bad. On our last night in Sanya, Silas and I took a taxi into town to go to a bar. Our taxi cab driver was talking to us in Chinese about different prostitutes and girls you can get in Sanya. I was happy that I could understand a majority of what he was saying and it was quite hilarious. It also gave me a chance to dig into my repertoire and practice my Chinese. We arrived at a bar called 88 Bar. At the entrance an Italian guy, named Lilo (like Lilo and Stitch) who worked there greeted us since we were the only foreigners. He offered us a table but we told him that we just wanted to look around. We ordered some beers and Lilo took us to a table and introduced us to his friends who
ended up being 5 Chinese girls. From that moment on, we did not have to pay for drinks since one of the girls was a VIP/Employee at the club, and dirty old men kept buying beers for our table. For the rest of the night the two of us drank with these 5 Chinese girls. It was fun. The “Chinese bar atmosphere” made it better too.
