Day 15 - Had a call from Yilun, a young computer science student I met in the Hong Kong hostel. He is studying at Guangzhou uni so knew the place well, we spent the day wandering the shopping malls and street markets, sampling the local food and finally taking a cruise boat down the Pearl river. Guangzhou has really developed in the 25 years since I was last here, many upmarket shopping malls and still the tradidional small shops selling dried fish and Chinese medicines. At night, the whole place is lit up with colour changing LED floodlights. All in all, a great day out.

Day 16 - a quieter day after yesterday. Went to Canton fair, had a short ride in an air conditioned trolley bus (a first) and had dinner in the nice cafe I found 2 days ago.

The Eye!
Going into London is like climbing into a can of sardines - too many people. I had an appointment about my eye and the problem seems to be a blockage to the blood supply in Right eye. I'll get a report from the Consultant and then decide what to do. One option is do nothing but that's not to my taste at all. It is an option however and tests have been done which on balance showed that some treatment is better than none at all. £250 for the visit was worth it just to know that something can be done, probably a one off treatment and followups done nearer home. All going well with you still? I gave dad a print out of your messages to while away a dull afternoon and he enjoyed them. Love from mum and dad xxx

re guangzhou
After climbing those endless stairways on the London underground I've spent the day 'licking my wounds'. Old bones tend to ache. Dad went up to Epping again and got through quite a lot of things - he couldn't do that without the scooter and according to him the thing is great fun and as good as driving a car. Well that's because he's not 17 anymore!!! But he is weak. Keep the enjoyment going. We get quite a kick out of your enthusiasm . Oh and do take some pics of Shanghai. Love from us both mum xxx
