Hej! Hello! Ni hao!
Hmmm... what has happened since I last wrote? The May holiday has past, so has the Midterms at Uni, and another birthday of mine, gosh! My dad has been visiting once again and I've played golf for the first time (strangely enough not with the golf freak himself, hehe, but with our cooperating transport company). Veronica and Mika have thrown a cray fish party (at the complete wrong time of year... but hey, we're in China!). I've also joined a cruise on the river with the Swedish consulate, taken a day trip to Hong Kong to sort out my visa, and prob a few more things 😉 Time is flying and so much is happening; I guess that's why
one week feels like two weeks, and sometimes two days! Am still enjoying life here, but start missing home, friends and family more and more. Looking forward to coming home for a bit over a month this summer.
Living in a huge city like Guangzhou is amazing in many ways; the people I meet, the culture I experience, the great variety of everything! But there are also drawbacks; like the constant noise wherever you go,
My class
I have a great class with class mates from all over the world! people everywhere, the sometimes huge cultural differences. Also the weather gets to me sometimes; the polution and hence the constant smog, the humidity and now the heat - the past week it's been 35 degrees Celcius!
Now I understand why many westerners prefer Hong Kong and Shanghai to Guangzhou. Going to Hong Kong, even if only for the day, is like a breath of fresh air. Only two hours by train south of GZ, and you're suddenly surrounded by people that neither spit right in front of you, nor push themselves onto the subway before you have the slightest chance to get off, hehe. Plus people speak English!!! 😊 But even though it's nice to get out of the crazieness of Guangzhou once in a while,
I always feel happy and at home when reaching the train station of GZ after beeing away.
May started with a week of holiday. It's one of three national holidays in China (also in October and February) and it's the time when a lot of people travel; back home or abroad. I stayed in Guangzhou the whole week, catching up on studying and work; relaxing and meeting up with with friends. It
Class lunch
Trying food from north east China (dong bei cuisine) with classmates and favourite teacher! was a well needed break; and a good recharge of run out batteries! 😊
My birthday was during the holidays. Spent the day with Jennie and had lunch at her grandmother's place. Met up with some more friends in the evening, having dinner and later drinks and dancing 😊 Was a really good night! The week after
Lisa, Carlos and I threw a common birthday party at the top floor of a café we hired. Was a really nice place with an outdoor terrace; food, music and drinks. About 50 people came (class mates, former EF colleagues, etc.) - it turned out to be a great evening!
After the May holiday
the Midterms were around the corner. We had three exams during one week; listening, reading & writing and speaking. It all went well! Learning Chinese is of course challenging and sometimes (no most of the time so far, hehe) it feels like being stuck on the same spot, not getting anywhere... But when being able to read short paragraphs and having simple conversations with Chinese people, it's so rewarding! Now, we have a bit more than a month ahead of us and should have the last finals
Sansan and I
At Ogilvy's 70's party launch of Puma's new selection. around July 7th.
My dad visited again for a week, which of course meant a lot of meetings, lunches and factory visits. But also time for us to spend together, talking about things outside of work. He stayed at a hotel nearby my place, which gave us quite a few evenings for us to have dinners together. He left about a week ago but has already booked his next trip! Coming back in less than a months time. Since we're trying to build the company pretty much from scratch; based on my father's years of experience in China but with a fresh start, it's of course very valuable to have also his presence in China.
In a month and a half (July 16th) I'll be heading to London for a few days, then coming to Sweden on July 20th! I can't wait to see everyone!!! Miss you a lot 😊 Till then big hugs and lots of love!
Puss o kram
Emma
