Entrance to Imperial Palace
This is Shenyang's entrance to the Imperial Palace. Yesterday after arriving we checked into the "Post Hotel" which literally looks onto the train station and was a twi minute walk. We got a pretty normal dorm room (with a public bathroom) and breakfast for 98 RMB a night (about $12). Then we started adventuring around the city. We took a bus, that one of our newfound friends from the train told us about to a random point and decided to get off and walk. There were hoards of traffic and many businesses for a few blocks (including a small food market). We bought some strange looking snacks (one looked like but didn't taste like a small cinnamon roll). Then we found a place and realized we'd walked to the Imperial Palace built during the Manchurian period. It was huge and expensive and about to close so we decided to come back later. Then we started shopping at a little place that sold long underwear. We didn't know how much it should be so we decided to wait till later to buy it. We continued shopping and with Cat's persuasion I bought 2 nice sweaters and a shirt. She found many places that she liked and we decided to come
Main temple at Imperial Palace

At first we didn't know why it was called this until we got up to the fifth floor and realized it had tons of things to entertain people - pool tables, shuffleboard, bowling, magic acts, arts and crafts areas, a skating rink, small bungee cords for kids, restaurants with swings and tons of other things. It was great. We got some chicken and seet rice and soup for dinner. Then we took a long walk back shopping some more on the way.
Today we got up and I had a fight with the shower. Really I just hd an extremely difficult time trying to find the shower (and gave up before I found it - three floors down from our room). The breakfast was great - a big buffett. My favorites were the seaweed, breads, and a new thing that Cat introduced me to called jou. Jou is a broth like thing with hot water and rice in it. We then went on a search for a hotel that doesn't exist any more (but it took a good hour and a half
Traditional Garb

Then we went back and paid the 50 kuai to tour the palace we saw yesterday. For whatever reason we found there were many places with people giving concerts around the city today. We had a great lunch of my first Pekking (ie Beijing) duck. It was a pretty huge meal including duck soup, roasted diuck with sauce and onions and a plate of celery and cashews. Cat had the same conversation many times about whether she's my translator and whether she's Chinese and where she is from. She said I should answer next time someone asks her if she's my translator. We then went back and bought the long underwear and Cat bought some boots and a shirt. We tried to take a taxi to the west temple but it didn't work very well until a woman stopped the taxi and translated for us. In the end we ended up on a street that looked like Las Vegas with all the neon lights. We thought the woman had translated wrong until we realized that the street was one block from the
Side Building
This is a building that I saw while walking along the streets of Shenyang. temple which (unfortunately) was closed. Then we walked down and tried to find a nonexistent market. Finally we walked to Government Square (unlike Dalian this seems to be one of the only Squares in the city). People were out all dancing to music togeteher and one group was playing instruments. We just hung around and watched them for a while. Then we went and found a great little place with extremely lively and animated Chinese people. I think those are the best kind of Chinese people. They're almost like cartoon characters and one can't help but laugh. Anyways, the place was a tea place but also had jaod-zi so I got 30 of them and Cat only ate 10. The tea there ranged from 1280 to 30 kuai (150$ to 3.50$). They're pretty serious about their teas here. It was a really nice slightly dark homely place so we just sat around talking for a while before leaving. Cat taught me some characters on the way back.

nice city
Nice to read journal about Shenyang. It is an exciting city. When the international Horticultural Exposition is coming, it becomes more beautiful and there is much more to see.
