girls helping get everything ready Sunday was the big day. We had a multi-page itinerary that I am ashamed to admit I did not read completely. Since Mark was also in the wedding, and Ray’s sisters seemed more organized and with it about the happenings, I relied on others. Kind of like group projects in college. Sometimes I was the leader and sometimes the follower…in this case, FOLLOWER.
I didn’t mess anything up. I helped when needed, showed up on time (besides that rehearsal dinner tardiness) and had a wonderful time making up games for the groomsmen. This was a fun Chinese tradition worked into the events. The bridesmaids had a meeting in the morning and we made a list of tasks and hurdles the men had to pass in order for the groom to get into the bridal suite and get the bride. We took a modern twist on an old tradition which made it really funny and fun (for the girls). The guys showed up at the room and pretended they couldn’t find Ray. The girls and I were not amused. We told them they better find Ray because their first mission was to go to Starbuck’s (see note above about modernization of

prepping the guest gifts Chinese traditional game) and get Ting’s favorite drink plus a list of drinks we all ordered just to be obnoxious. Funny thing—Mark had gone to Starbucks earlier that morning and brought back a Grande Cappuccino with Vanilla syrup for Ting. But, I confirmed with him later and Ray knew the drink on his own. They returned to the room, dropped off the drinks and attempted to give us chicken wings too (another challenge—how did they know?!) but we refused to take the wings and sent them off on mission 2.
Next was the Corn Nuts Mission. They had to go to another hotel room (family member) and buy the nuts with hong bao (red envelope with money). Normally, I believe, the groom bribes the family and friends to get to the bride. I don’t believe Corn Nuts are a traditional Chinese food but we were mixing in modern bits and pieces to make it more fun. Ting likes Corn Nuts. The third challenge was the best one. We made the groom and each groomsman do 5 situps with Alexis (Ray’s daughter) on his back! I was a little scared when it was Mark’s turn, but he was fine. Great

groom sweats the challenges form. He did me proud. They all made it through the challenge and we were screaming and laughing so loudly I thought the police might come.
Challenge 4, we just took the chicken wings—stalling for time as the bride was still getting ready—and then the final challenge was the groom had to sing 5 songs with the word love in it. He succeeded with some help from his buddies (and from the bridesmaids) and finally, he was allowed into the bridal suite! The guys all came in and found out the final challenge was inside the room. The groom had to find the bride’s shoes! He found one and then after a bit, found the second…helped put them on his bride and we were off to the ceremony.
Next...the actual wedding/reception.
