So we are still in Phnom Penh, and not much has changed. It may be the weekend but it is still the festival of the dead, and everything is still pretty dead on the streets. We did venture out of the lovely hotel complex today despite Lou not feeling great. We took a walk to the Russian market ‘The’ shopping destination according to the guidebook.
After a 30 minute walk we arrived to find it closed bar a few stalls around the edge selling fresh foods. The main market place was locked up, and so we got in a Tuk Tuk and headed to the waterfront for a drink before returning to the hotel. Lou and I decided to eat at the steakhouse around the corner from the hotel, mainly as Lou was feeling worse and worse and close was the main priority. WE both had a decent burger and chips, a food Lou seems to revert to often when not feeling so hot.
After that we returned to our room, and Lou went to bed, whilst I had a brief swim and checked if extending our stay for another night was possible. Indeed it was so I returned
and retired early.
We both awoke at a sensible time but Lou was feeling even worse, so didn’t leave the room all day. I organised the extra days accommodation which turned out fine but the nightshift I had discussed it with the night before hadn’t left a handover note so the day shift had a bit of a time sorting it out, but got there in the end. I then went for a walk about town with Scott and Sara leaving Lou to snooze. We went as far as the Central market which showed more signs of life than the market the previous day but was still clearly underpar in comparison to its normal state. I left the others to look around the royal palace as this was something Lou had expressed an interest in doing if she felt better, and returned with a few bits to eat for lunch.
The day was indeed so low key that it wasn’t until late in the afternoon that I remembered the significance of the date, and wished I had paid more attention in the morning so I could have witnessed 10:10:10 on 10:10:10 but I didn’t so I guess I’ll
have to wait for all the elevens next year!
Another suitably quiet afternoon, prior to the rain arriving with some gusto in the early evening just as I needed to go to reception and back about 6 times whilst sorting out both onward bus tickets for the next day, and a takeaway pizza for us to eat as Lou didn’t want to leave the room.
The guy in reception even ended up driving to collect the pizza as the heavy rain, coupled with the festival meant that drivers either weren’t working or decided it wasn’t worth their while.
We are now booked onto a coach for Siem Reap tomorrow and will in total have spent 5 nights in Phnom Penh. In the time we have seen a closed market, a semi-closed market, and our hotel. It is nice to relax but this was taking it too far and I for one will be glad to see the back of the palce as it has done little to endear itself to me. I hope for better things elsewhere in this country else I will be moving on swiftly.
