We got on a pleasant (with asian standards) 6-hours long bus journey to Phnom Penh. We had a fair idea where we wanted to go and managed to get from the bus to the guesthouse in less than 30 minutes. However, they were full. Somehow they magicly managed to find an empty room and it was ours. The place is west-facing and overlooks a lake. Most of the guesthouse is probably built on the lake on stilts. It is a very relaxed place with nice staff, one of the girls told me that she would "love me longtime" if I gave her a valentines day present. Unfortunately I forgot.
In the guesthouse stay 3 Danish guys and I had a small chat to them. They never leave the place in front of the tv and watch movies all days.
The guys that run the guesthouse sort out our visa for Vietnam, only 32 usd. It is cheaper than anywhere I know and I don't know how it works but this is one of those things I don't ask about. As long as we get our visa it is fine.
Phnom Penh is a busy town and it takes
a while to cross the road. There are a lot of motorcycles here, but the thing is to walk and let them go around you. It can be quite scary, but I am now pretty good at crossing the streets.
It is cheaper her as well, maybe because Siem Reap is the tourist place to go. For 2 usd you can eat as much indian food as you want.
We went to a handicraft-place in Siem Reap our last day and got a guided tour all around how they make things and what things they make. Some things had a long story about their origin. All in all very nice things and very expensive.
We have now also come to the conclusion that our estimate of 4.5 months in South-east Asia is nowhere enough. We would really like to go to Myanmar and Indonesia as well. This I don't think will be done. But there is still not enough time. We plan to leave Cambodia for Vietnam in the beginning of March. Then there is all of Vietnam, Laos, northern Thailand, maybe diving in Thailand, maybe go back to Borneo and do some diving there and the
Perhentian Islands of the eastcoast of Malaysia. This will be hard to do in 2 weeks.
So we went to Malaysian Airlines to change our tickets to the middle of May. Once again the incompetence of England bites me in the butt. Our tickets are only valid until 2006-12-31. This to me is a mystery as our original departure date for Australia is in the middle of March. There was a problem when we bought our tickets and they wanted us to pay an extra 200 pounds each to get flying. After a small threat to take them to court we got our tickets. But still they fucked it all up. Anyway as we are totally innocent in this matter I assume that it will be sorted soon. And hopefully some incompetent people get sacked and go out to live in a forest where nobody have to be bothered by them ever again.
Anyway I enjoy this city more than I thought I would. I have come to measure distances not in miles or kilometres or even minutes but by a number. This number is how many times you get asked if you want a tuktuk or a
motorcycletaxi. I think the going rate is about 20 per kilometre. They are all very polite and you just have to say "no, thanks" to be left alone.
We should get our visa for Vietnam in a couple of hours and if the flighttickets get done we will be heading south to the beach. It could be hard to get a room since the Chinese new year happens in a few days and it is a big holiday for this region.
One of the American guys we met in Siem Reap (they both got sick with bad stomach and fever when we got sick with colds) is an electrician and we spoke about it for a couple of hours. So now I am finding out how to become one. This trip was to me to get to know what I want to do since I won't become a professional footballer. I have been thinking about plummer or carpenter but now electrician looks most interesting. It's a bit of time until it's time to make a decision so I might change my mind again a couple of times.
