Brad and I ventured to Cambodia shortly after his arrival. We booked a bus through a travel agent on Soi 11. The ride ended up being around 9 to 11 hours by the time it was all said and done with stops, border crossings and getting transport on the other side (even though we were told we'd have a 4 person car waiting for us) into Sieam Reap. Surprisingly I slept the whole time on the bus. The border was a little hectic but we managed to make it through without falling victim to the exchange money scam or any others for that matter. We had a guy guiding us through the whole time and we ended up hopping on his bus for 100 baht on the other end of the border crossing. We didn't really mind so much since it took us to a cheap hostel close to the old market. It was called the backpacker hostel. The next day we hooked up with a tuk tuk driver for a tour of Ankor Wat. We went to all the popular ones Ankor Wat, Ankor Thom, Bayon and Ta Prohm. We spent about 2 hours or more in Ankor Wat. We
then hopped on the tuk tuk to Ankor Thom and shortly after making it through Bayon it started raining. This didn't end up being a problem since we took shelter in a tiny temple and loved it. We sat waiting for the rain to clear, I spun poi and Brad recorded the rain. It was really nice. After the rain passed we saw the beautiful Ta Prohm and then headed back to Siem Reap for a massage and dinner.
The next day we decided to head to ko pun phluk floating villages. We did it without a tour guide but were given transportation. We drove most of the way there on a Tuk Tuk and really got to see the people and the landscapes passing by. After the tuk tuk we took a boat the rest of the way into the floating village. It was amazing to see all the houses on stilts, such beautiful scenery, but it was hard seeing so many poor people. We waved at the kids as we passeed and they waved back. After passing through the village we hopped on canoes and were taken to the flooded forest. It was really beautiful as well.
We were in the water surrounded by tons of trees. Close to the end of the flooded forest there was a floating restaurant we ate at before heading back in the other direction. I definitely recommend this tour it's great. We were the only ones in our boat, there weren't many tourists around, the people are very nice and it cost a whole 16 dollars.
Our last day we decided to go to the less traveled temples around. We went to Pre Rup, Mebon, Ta Som, Neak Pean and Preah Khan. These temples were obviously smaller than the ones we saw the first day, but they each had their own character. In one of them there was an old woman giving bracelets to people and chanting something while doing so. We think it was a blessing? Not sure. Either way she was so happy while doing it, it was my favorite part of the day. After all the temple hopping we had to pack, checkout and hop on a 17 hour bus to Ho Chi Minh City.
