MONDULKIRI This is my new hideaway retreat, if I go off the radar and no one can find me this is where I will be. The most memorable place yet on our trip is the Mondulkiri Nature Reserve. The work they do here stems much further than parading some wildlife around, they are giving everything they can to preserve, promote and to care for the local wildlife. To start with I thought it was just some elephants but after the lovely owners taking with us one day we realised at how much effort everyone puts into ensuring the lives of all animals in the vicinity and the fight to dampen the illegal trade of Cambodia’s animals to china and Vietnam for medicine or trophies.
The setting for this great escape is a few kilometres from the quiet town of Mondulkiri, its around 5 to 6 hours away from Phnom Penh, once you hit the town, phone or arrange a pick up from the reserve and start getting excited for the peace and experience of stepping back in time and walking with the animals like Tarzan himself.
The Mondulkiri Nature Reserve has a huge area
where the reception, restaurant, book area, bar and pool table are situated. From here you can sit back and listen to excellent work the staff do for the animals and feel like you can be part of something if you have the will and want. The sleeping huts or bungalows are great value for money as $15 will get you a home for the night and don’t be alarmed when you hear a horse or cow mulling around beneath you, because this just adds to the ambiance. When you wake up you have a beautiful scenery to start the day and the lovely pace of the reserve makes you feel like your life has been lost until now.
If you are competent then get a motor bike so you can tour around and check out the waterfalls and view points around the area, but the real surprise is the elephants.
We spent a day with the infamous CHAM, who is the Lionel Ritchie of the east. This man has endless talents, he will be ducking and diving at night as James Bond 007 to capture illegal activity and prevent illegal
trading of animals and during the day be a lovable tour guide with cherub like serenades of old musical classics to blend in with the amazing time with the elephants. You spend a day in jungle with Cham and the elephant keepers, there is amazing walks with picturesque scenery and two elephants to get to know and watch as they eat their weight in banana plants and everything they come close to.
As you sit and watch the elephants it makes you imagine a different world that we are no longer part of, before it used to be nature and man as one, but industrial carnage has raped this planet of a natural balance and time spent on this Nature Reserve makes you wish you could do more. The Mondulkiri Nature Reserve is a must for any one coming to Cambodia. It is here you meet the true locals and submerge into a state of well being because the place just oozes flow and a chilled out serenity that many try to find with meditation and expensive psychologists. Here you can have your food and board for free if you help out with the running on the reserve, donations
are welcome but your time is more valuable and you will reap the inner rewards from this truly mesmerising experience.
Be part of the Mondulkiri Nature Reserve and explore Cambodia’s nature and your inner peace.
