About 70 years ago, the New Zealand Forest Service did 'trial plantings' of various species in order to obtain information for future plantation forests. Redwoods (both 'coast redwoods' - Sequoia sempervirens, and 'giant redwoods' - Sequoiadendron gigantea) were tried in a couple of places. The better-known trial of these species is at Whakarewarewa, but a lesser-known trial plot exists at Karapoti - near Wellington. Both species were planted together, and, in these particular growing conditions, the faster-growing 'coast redwoods' have dominated the slower-growing 'giant redwoods'
