JANUARY 1947 WE DEPARTED NORFOLK, VA. ON OPERATION "HIGHJUMP" SERVING ON BOARD USS PHILIPPINE SEA CV47 TAKING ADM. RICHARD BYRD TO THE SOUTH POLE FOR HIS EXPLORATION.
WEATHER CAUSED US TO "LAY TO" FOR A BIT OFF THE ROSS ICE SHELF IN THE ROSS SEA BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO TAKE-OFF. JATO TAKE-OFF WAS SPECTACULAR.
WHILE THERE WE LOST A CHOPPER OVER THE SIDE.
QUITE AN EXPERIENCE FOR A YOUNG 18 YEAR OLD S2/C TO TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD AND BE A PART OF THE GREATEST NAVY IN THE WORLD!
