Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection. Opposition and labor groups launched general strikes in 2003 to pressure MUGABE to retire early; security forces continued their brutal repression of regime opponents.

After only a brief stay in Johannesburg I travelled back to the airport - to fly to Zimbabwe! I was very glad to leave Johannesburg. I woke up this morning freezing cold and when I looked out the window I found it was pouring with rain. I got to the airport early, had a brunch in the cafe and perused the gift shop before settling into the departure lounge with a book. I was amused to see a giant model giraffe looming over the departure board! Although boarding was delayed we arrived in Zimbabwe on time. I stepped off the plane [View Full Entry]

The thrilling bridge swing.
I had the time of my life in Victoria Falls. The weather was finally warmer, and there was so much to do. I bungee jumped off the 3rd highest bungee jump in the world and I absolutely loved, loved, loved it! Leah and I tandem jumped together and people said we screamed the whole way down, bouncing back up and again, the whole way down again. After the bungee jump, I did a tandem bridge swing. This is similar to bungee but you drop straight down off the bridge and swing like a pendulum. This swing was way more intense and [View Full Entry]

We had a very long photo session at this view point b/c it was the only dry area.
We arrived at Victoria Falls around lunch time on the 26th. The campsite that we stayed at was called The Rest Camp. It was where all the old people stay. There was another campsite down the road called Shoestrings, that was a load of fun. But Oasis is not allowed to stay there because it can get to rowdy. This was the last day of the trip for some of the passengers, so we had to do a truck clean. After the truck clean, we watched an information video on all the ways you can scare the shit our of yourself [View Full Entry]

Ganze 30 US$ kostete uns das Tagesvisum. Soll Robert sich damit den Allerwertesten putzen......... Noch im Niemandsland kamen die Leute auf uns zugestuermt und wollten uns alles Moegliche und Unmoegliche verkaufen. Es gibt mittlerweile so weni [View Full Entry]

She was upset we didn't eat "her" breakfast.
At the early morning game tour Lee petted a wild lion and still has one hand. Our “lion encounter” included breakfast which we did not realize. Upon returning to the hotel, our Dining Dominatrix Diva was visibly upset that we declined “her” breakfast. The next morning as she seated us she said “Room 11 - You did NOT eat breakfast yesterday.” Our explanation failed to placate her, but she smiled when I took her picture with Lee. Two vivid memories from the Zambezi River Sunset Cruise: 1. The “Elephant Diet” - one squat and you drop 48 [View Full Entry]

Our first two nights in JoBurg were at the Airport Game Lodge, “Where Wild is Mild, and Game is Tame.” We selected the Pretoria City Tour of the Vortrekker Monument, Church Square, and Paul Kruger House. He knew how to live, but died in exile. We have 10 million Zimbabwe Dollar notes that won’t buy a stick of gum. Zimbabwe only deals in U.S.D. and S. Africa Rand which are also basically worthless but easy to convert. We tried to eat at Wimpy’s, but after our first two choices were “not available”, and we looked at the kitchen, we purchased [View Full Entry]

Now that we were so close to the Victoria Falls we could of course not skip them! Went to the town called Vic Falls and stayed at Shoestring Backpackers. Great place with a pair of massive great danes guarding the place. =) Had a walk to Pizza Inn for dinner, nom nom, but the walk home was Scary! Pitch black, who knows what is hiding in the dark? Buffalos, elephants, stray dogs, crazy people... But we made it home safely. =) The next day we walked to the Falls, about a 20 minute walk. Rented ponchos at the gate, trust us [View Full Entry]

Victoria Falls

The last 4 days have been amazing! On Thursday morning we started our 3 day Hwange experience. Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park. We arrived at the travel agent meeting point at 8:45 to find we were the only 2 people on this trip. We were previously surprised by the lack of tourists around Victoria Falls and it is evermore apparent that the bad political state of the country is putting off many tourists from coming here at the moment though there is no need to worry, these things are blown out of proportion and everywhere we have been feels reasonably [View Full Entry]

Hello England! We arrived today in Victoria Falls after a 11 hour flight first to Jo'Burg then a 2 hour flight transfer. Was shattered when first arrived but after hour kip went a stroll to meet the local wildlife - the first of which were Wild Boar! These were actually wild ones though not like those being served on The Vine menu! Lots of monkeys also (we were told to keep windows shut to stop them coming in!) and lots of elephant dung so presumably we're see some elephants sooner or later! We're exploring Victoria Falls properly later in the week [View Full Entry]

Please when you visit Victoria Falls think twice about undertaking activities which involve using captive animals. Whilst undoubtedly amazing personal experiences, have a thought for the captive animals which are being used to make money for the commercial opperations which exploit them. For example, there are over 50 captive elephants in Victoria Falls which are exploited in elephant-back rides. Most of these are orphans (from culling operations) but some have recently been captured from the wild - taken from one of Zimbabwe's National Parks. Keeping elephants in captivity and utilising th [View Full Entry]
