Kevin!
This is Kevin, a gorgeous soul that reminds me heaps of my brother Josh! Ahh, I love them both. June 19th, Sunday @ noon
Well I just went to the internet becasue they power was on, but the shop was closed! They are supposed to be open but I guess that's Africa - they all do as they please, no regulations to guide anything... the good thing is that I was in no rush, its Sunday and theres literally nothing to do, especially because its been raining all morning and absolutely dumped last night and yesterday. The 'streets' are straight mud - my shoes are brown and soo heavy now! My clothes have mud splashes all over them but everything is dirty here constantly so I can't (and dont care to) maintain a clean wardrobe. So since I walked all the way up to the main road, I figure I may as well walk another 15 minutes to Tanz Hands, that great cafe at the disability rehab center and treat myself to something yummy. The cake of the day was chocolute and nut brownie, so I splurged! I lounged there for a bit, its like a little resort in the middle of the craziness of Tanzania, and than I strolled back home.
On Friday after school, Jake and I had
HIP HOP STREET
I work on hip hop street and have been dying to get this photo... winning! been talking about doing something fun for the kids.. so we had bought sprinkles at the western import foods shop (such expensive sprinkles!) last week in preparation.. so after work we leave the orphanage around 1.30pm, walk home for lunch which is around 2, and than we walked back to the orphanage. The kids nap from 2-4 so there's nothing going on, but we started to prepare FAIRY BREAD!! I know my Americans (besides papa bear) don't know what ferry bread is, but my aussies better know! It's such a treat for kids in Australia, I remember growing up with it and i just LOVE it!! So Jake being Aussie was really keen on the idea, and its cool because we both grew up with it so its nice to share with the kids we've become so close with. We bought bread and butter from one of the miliion local shops and got to spreading.. We made about 60 slices of it and it was a hit! The kids were so funny, they didn't really know what to do with it but were so excited by all the colors. A few of the kids ate all the sprinkles off first,
Fam
This is Bibi Sara on the couch holding doreene and dorese, and collie on the couch, with sharika sitting on the far side, and jake and i standing ! others bit into the middle and left the crust ( I guess that's a global thing for kids to not eat crust!) So that was heaps of fun, and than we walked home with a bunch of the kids... my house is about 20 minutes away, so many of the kids live along the walk and being with the kids outside of the school setting is such a blast. They are the happiest kids and their joy is contagious, you just can't have a bad time if they are around.
Saturday we went into Arusha, ate at Masai Cafe, and than went to Shoprite. Same old, Arusha is just not my favorite place to be, its basically a dirty small city with too many people and too many cars, and being white everyone just hastles you to buy things or blah blah. Anyways, we took the dala back, and after dinner we made fairy bread for Collie - the 6 year old boy that lives in the house, and Bibi Sarah and Shakira - the two live-in houseworkers. They absolutely went crazy for the fairy bread, thought it was just the best thing!! THey all kept saying "mzuri sana keki!"
Baby!
All of the women carry their babies like this, and its the best thing ever! So much better than a stroller... when i have babies, mark my word, I WILL carry my baby like this. which means "very great cake!" It was the cutest, because they don't get anything - they don't even eat rice and beans with us! It's sad acutally, beacuse bibi sarah has got to be one of the most incredible women I've ever met, and i would just love to do something so nice for her.. she showed us a collection of pictures that she has, so we printed her a photo of all of us together and she was SO happy. It's such a blast living with them, noone speaks english but we have the best time playing sherades in attempt to communicate. Bibi Sarah is amazing, she does absolutely everything - she cooks, cleans, raises the two babies, one 5 months and the other nearly 2. The owners of the home, Crispin and Delena, are never home, only from about midnight to 7am, so bibi sarah raises the kids and does absolutely everything. Rujabu, the cook, left abruptly last week and moved back to Tanga... that's all a bit weird. So Shakira, the new girl, has moved in and its good to see her feeding the babies and everything as well, just so it's a bit less pressure on bibi.
I'm going to try to go into Moshi this week to explore some more of what this place has to offer, and hopefully get in touch with a placement person within the hospital - I would love to do some more in the health world over here. Hope all is well, miss you all!
