travel from east africa to india

hi everyone

i will be teaching near Arusha in Tanzania from January to April 2010, this part of my trip is relatively straightorward and has already been mostly organised - except return flights. I have friends who will be backpacking in India from april onwards and i have been trying to find reasonable ways of travelling to India from East Africa to meet them. So far all i have found are ridiculously expensive flights (in the 1000's of pounds) and some vague mentions of cargo ships on forums.

I was hoping someone on TravelBlog may have had experience of making a trip like this and could advise me on an inexpensive way of making the journey
