So after years of thinking about this we've actually plucked up the courage to do it. On Saturday 24th August at 4am we're leaving Knysna on the trip we always dreamed of since moving to South Africa in May 2016. This week has been mad, so many plans to make, accommodation to book, things to remember to get (puncture kits, first aid kit, camping gear, emergency rations, water, fuel, anti malaria tablets etc etc etc). Expecting to cover in the region of 6000km in less than 2 weeks with 8 days in Botswana and Namibia with a mini trip to see Vic Falls it's going to be epic. Zo daar ven ik dan weer even. De WiFi in Afrika is niet optimaal en vaak alleen maar op hotspots te gebruiken. En dan ven je nog niet verzekerd of t lukt. We hebben ondertussen het gebied van de wildparken verlaten. We hebben de laatste dagen daar drie waanzinnige gamedrives gedaan. Bij Bayala gingen we ook echt of Road om cheeta’s leeuwen en olifanten van heel dichtbij te bekijken. De laatste gamedrive hebben we heel veel neushoorns gezien. Na een lange reisdag zijn we daarna terecht gekomen in de Drakensbergen op een groot resort. We hebben daar een mooie wandeling gemaakt en de rest rustig aangedaan. De eereste volle dag in Zuid-Afrika was druk en goed besteed. ‘s Morgens starten we nog fris met een windje, maar gedurende dag werd het aangenaam en zonnig, zeker boven de twintig graden. Eerst zijn we naar Pretoria gereden om het Paul Krugerhuis en het Voortrekkersmonument te bezoeken en om een indruk te krijgen van de staf. De lunch genoten we bij het monument, daarna reden we terug richting Johannesburg om Soweto te bezoeken. Het was heel indrukwekkend om te zien hoe groot en gevarieerd dit township is. Je realiseert je maar weer eens goed hoe goed wij het hebben. We hebben het monument van Hector Pietersen bezocht en het huis van Nelson Mandela. Onze gids had ons op het hart gedrukt om geen geld te geven aan de mensen, dat was soms best lastig. We ... read more

We started today at 4:30 for our final morning safari into Kruger National Park. Today's goal: rhinoceros and leopard. Today's actual hits included: elephants, hyena, cape turtle doves, emerald-spotted wood doves, duiker grey antelope, tawny eagle, battaliers, vultures, wild dogs, RHINOS on 3 occasions(!), vereaux eagle owl, warthogs, and LIONS(!). We saw so many impala (antelopes) they felt like part of the family. Though we never found the elusive leopard, today's "hunt" was very successful. The highlights were the rhinos and the pack of wild dogs. Our guide, Mary-Anne, was super excited to have found these two species for us. Though many attempts have been made to tame/domesticate the wild dogs, even those reared from birth, none have been successful. Picking up from where we left off... After finishing last night's blog, everyone put a few more logs and pieces of coal on their respective fires and made their way to bed. Just as he was about to fall asleep, Jake moved his leg and felt a soft, warm thing by his foot. Panicking that there was some sort of animal in his bed, he gave it a good kicking, only to find out it was a hot water bottle that someone on the hotel staff had put in as a warm-up. It was a moment of panic and a water bottle, not a wild beast. Today we started early, with breakfast at six and on the road to Kruger National Park around seven.
