one proud African woman in her room in the township
So yesterday was quite the day....I think I saw enough sheep heads being bbq'd on street corners to last for quite awhile. We went into the oldest township in Cape Town. The CCS staff are really trying to culturally immerse us and have us understand the current factors influencing the politics and welfare of the South African people, and I really love that. Anyhow, these homes in the townships are essentially the size of a college dorm room, with 6 bedrooms in one "unit", meaning everyone shares a "kitchen" and a toilet. When you see pics, you will understand why kitchen is in quotes. Everyone pays about 20ZAR per month to live here (less than 5 USD), and is still a better living condition than many. I will try to upload pics.

After that we went and visited schools for kids with HIV/AIDS in the Xhosa communitiy. Ahhhh, I love the sound of little African kids screaming while they're jumping up and down in response to seeing us....only to realize that they are screaming "white people, white people!!!!" Very Haiti reminiscent! They don't know much English, but one little boy knew how to sing MJ's "Beat It" and soon the

whole room was gyrating and spinning! Oh, and do you know that in the Xhosa culture, it is considered respectful to call women by their first name with "Mama" preceding it. For example, one of my favorite house staff here is Mama Linda.....So this means I am officially Mama Mia! I love it!!!
