Day 3
This morning we had our last game drive. After sighting the usual suspects, we went in search of lion but instead landed in the middle of a herd of elephant. There were at least fifteen adults and numerous babies from a couple of years down to a couple of months. We skipped our morning coffee stop to spend more time with them as they grazed next to the truck. Imagine, being eye to eye with a teenage elephant. After breakfast we boarded the bus for our next stop,Knysna ( K is silent). We meet our driver Alfred and our guide Donovan. They will shepherd us to Cape town and drop us at the airport on our last morning in the country.
We will be moving west along the "garden route". The landscape changes from dense thickets to ranch, pine tree plantations and farm land. Before we arrive at our hotel for the night, we stop at Tsitsikamma National Park where those interested could take a nature walk. Joe and I opted to stay near the shore and enjoy a local beer. The shore is rugged and the rock formations are like nothing I
have ever seen. We spot our first Brassies; furry animals this size of a cat but look like a guinea pig. We watch the waves crash against the rocks. There is a small beach and another small area where divers, snorkelers and boaters can enter the water. A ranger in a boat monitors the area. This is great white shark waters.
After an hour or so it was back on the bus to our lunch stop. Our restaurant is in a hotel in a lovely village. Like most of our meals, this is buffet style and there is a great variety of salads, hot dishes, cheese, fruit breads and deserts. So far every meal has been very, very good; fresh and tasty and well presented. All the employees have been uniformly welcoming and appear to be genuinely glad to have us visit.
We arrive at the Premier Hotel, Knyna and the staff is at the door to greet us. We have a lovely refreshing fruit punch and are shown to our room which is large and nicely appointed. After a short relaxing time we head to the restaurant for dinner. While most of the
group took the bus to the waterfront, we opted to stay in the hotel. There were six of us for dinner and I really mean only six of us. This assured us of the very best service. Having had a late lunch we were not ravenously hungry so I ordered a fish cake appetizer and a glass of wine, Joe had fish and beer. The plates arrived and my appetizer was as large as Joe's entree and both were delicious. I have been fighting a cold since day two but it has finally hit full force. I look forward to a good night's sleep. At least we don't have a 4:00am wake up to see the animals (not that I minded in the least).
