After seeing the whales last night, we sat down for dinner and the chef was happy to cater for my ever whim so I had a super yummy dinner. G really enjoyed his too, although I wasn’t impressed that Santa will have one less little helper after G’s meal (G was quick to point out that I could help Rudolf with my red nose from the sun - well at least I am not patchy!).
We then headed back up to our room and the hotel was spectacular at night - there were 2 little tea light candles on every step leading up to the room and more tea lights in our room - totally my scene!
We started relatively early today - got up at 7.30am, with sunshine streaming in through the windows. Breakfast was awaiting us - and I was super impressed with the yummy berry fruit smoothie. G settled for scrambled eggs and bacon - that belly of his is getting bigger already!
After breakfast this morning, I headed out for some rays while G packed the bag for the day. After all our travels yesterday and our long trek along the Garden Route to George tomorrow, we
decided to have a relatively easy day not driving too far and then having the afternoon by the pool and the sea.
Our first stop was Stanford, a little village just past Hermanus that G fancied seeing. I popped into the off license just to see what they had and emerged, much to G’s delight, with large bottles of the becks no alcohol beer that we brought with us - you can’t get these in the UK! So we now have large bottles of no alcohol becks, small bottles of no alcohol becks and egu to take around - G is ecstatic about packing tomorrow!
Our next stop was Danger Point. This is so called as it is notoriously dangerous for ships due to the currents and rocks in the sea - apparently the peninsula sticks out 8km! Our hotel is also called after the Birkenhead ship which sank after hitting the rocks in 1852! (factual point for the day!). G would also like to add that the sinking of this ship spurned the phrase ‘women and children first’ when ships are sinking - apparently, until that point it was common place for the ship’s captain to shout ‘every man
for themselves’. However, when the Birkenhead sank, the sailors, mindful of the fact that they had women and children on board, and not wanting to overload the lifeboats, stood ‘on parade’ on board the ship until all the women and children were off.
While at Danger Point, G scaled the steps of the lighthouse- all 99 of them (still no match for the Giant’s Stairway!), while I sat on the bench, listened to some tunes and read my book. We then headed right down to the rocks by the sea and sat and had two of the large no alcohol becks recently purchased.
Our last stop of the day before returning for R&R was Pearly Beach, known for its infinite white sandy beach where we sat and had the picnic provided to us by the hotel - sandwiches (which G said was literally what he had - he had sand, bread, ham and cheese next to me on the towel - I have got no better in managing to keep the sand on the ground in my old age!), fruit, nuts and Simba cheese flavour nik naks!!!
After G dusted himself down, we headed back to the car and back
to Hermanus. When we arrived, I headed straight for the lounger by the pool and overlooking the sea - I saw this picture in the brochure and wanted to lie there from when I arrived! G went into the pool (a little quicker than yesterday - I am sure it cant be that cold!) and read his book to plan our route for tomorrow.
I then headed for the spa for my massage while G drove into Hermanus to look at the town itself and fill up the car with petrol - he was most impressed with a tank full of fuel for less than £15. All the petrol stations here are serviced and a guy puts the petrol in the car for you (you are supposed to tip some coins for this). The petrol came to 205 rand and the minimum G had was 300 rand in notes (no coins) so told the guy just to take 220 rand. Apparently this must be a huge tip as G said the guy had a huge beaming smile and then cleaned his windscreen for free!
We then rendezvoused on the loungers for an ega and sat watching the huge waves before
getting changed for dinner and we saw at least 4 of the southern right whales jumping in and out of the ocean - they were much closer than last night and you could totally see their huge black tails sploshing down into the water. G said that it totally reminded him of Cyprus and Homer in the sea.
We have just finished speaking to mum on the phone and, after Mum could not get through last night (and calling a safari park as I gave her the wrong number!) we got her a direct dial for the room. G came back really excited with the number and said he was only giving me the number if he could answer the phone, to which I agreed. When the phone rang he answered “hermanus shark cage diving - we guarantee to get you back in one piece” really pleased with himself. However mum didn’t listen as she was concentrating on simply saying the room number so G is gutted! G says he is planning his next ‘MIL sabotage’!
