We are now back in Gordon's Bay after a much better return flight Toronto/Amsterdam/Cape Town. There was only and 2 1/2 hour layover in Amsterdam and the total travel time was around 23 hours. We found a really great web site that we used to get the best flights. It's http://matrix.itasoftware.com. You can't book through the site, but it covers most air routings around the world, all major airlines and the costs. There is also an app for those using Apple. It's very easy to use and even provides a graph showing the lowest fare over a span of dates. App is ITA Software, "on the fly". I think the ITA is for International Travel Association. This week we got settled back into our apartment at Highcliffe House after receiving a warm welcome back from Jane ... read more

We've decided to return to Gordon's Bay and finish our "winter getaway" returning home on April 4th so will start sending blogs again. We were glad to have come home for my sister's funeral service and to be able to spend time with family. It was a very appropriate service and Linda would have been very pleased. All her family were there as well as a lot of good friends many of whom gave her great support during her illness. She will be greatly missed!!!Just before we were called home, we had just left Gordon's Bay and drove for a couple of days to the Drakensberg area which borders Lesotho. Lesotho is a separate country but surrounded by South Africa. On the way, we stopped at Graff Reinet which is in the "Free State". Close by was ... read more

This is our last Blog for South Africa. Unfortunately we had to cut short our visit and return home. My sister, who has been ill took a turn for the worst and passed away on February 7th the day after we arrived back home. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her!!! Debra had a minor health issue that required a consultation. Jane(our hostess) arranged for an appointment with her Doctor in which we were able to see within a couple of hours and the total costs with some medication was $49.00 CDN. It's anecdotal but quite a difference to the Canadian system!!! We found a place that serves reasonably good oysters, called "Thirsty Oyster" Still not as good as PEI/NB. Pictures attached of Gordon's Bay from the water processing plant high up in ... read more

Did our usual wine tours on Saturday and had lunch at Hartenberg Winery. The food and wine was good but not quite as good as Somerbosch last week. Also visited Beyerskloof winery which are noted for their Pinotage which we bought a bottle along with their very nice port. On the way to Stellenbosch we stopped by a craft market in Somerset West which offered many unique local crafts that we found quite interesting and certainly not the "run of the mill" craft market. Attended an outdoor concert in Helderberg park which is in Somerset West and about 20 minutes from Gordons Bay. The band was The Shiraz who originated in England and were formerly called The Dooley's. Apparently they were quite a competitive band to Abba back in the late sixties early seventies Jane and ... read more

After spending a little time at our new practise range, we have our first golf game at the Strand Golf Course. The green fees for Debra and I with pull carts was a total of $55.00. By joining the South Africa Golf Association we get affiliate rates at most of the courses which is considerable savings. The membership cost $230.00 for both Debra and I. Even without the membership, golf is very reasonable. The Strand course would be comparable to Hidden Lake (for those who know that course). On Thursday we played De Zalze Golf which would be a considered a premium course in Canada, certainly to the level of a Club Link Gold Course. With the SAGA membership, the green fees were $32.00. This is a beautiful course nestled amongst the vineyards. It also has ... read more

Our Hosts, Jim and Jane took us to Triggerfish Brewery which is managed by their friend Christine. It's a micro brewery situated in an industrial area that is scheduled for re-development. Sampled a wide variety of brews and settled on a couple which were very good. The beer market in South Africa appears quite similar to Canada. The mass market is dominated by big companies and consumtion of large established Brands is declining and being replaced to a large extent by micro breweries such as Triggerfish. The young beer drinkers don't want to drink their fathers beer brands. Also went on the hunt for local oysters for Friday night burger night. Found a local fish store close to the apartment and purchased a dozen from the East Coast (Indian ocean), out of the Knysna area. Unfortunately ... read more

We're gradually getting ourselves acquainted with the area and walked on the beech in Strand then visited a new Vodacom golf driving range that offers membership. We joined for $130.00 per person from January to March. They have great facilities, 2 restaurants, 3 putting greens, numerous tee boxes and sand traps etc. As part of the membership they offer group lessons. In addition, we signed Debra up for private lessons 12 x 1/2 hour lessons for $160.00, which was great value. The food at the restaurants are very reasonably priced, we shared a pizza and a large bottle of sparkling water for $11.00 with tip!! Close by is the Somerset West mall which is very large with upscale shopping etc. Debra is waiting for a rainy day which appear to be few and far between. We ... read more

Today we were invited to a picnic lunch at Vergelegen Winery by Harry and Susan, our friends from France who are "wintering" in South Africa and have done so since 2006. This was a fabulous introduction to South African Wine Country. There were tables set amongst Canphor trees which are quite majestic and some of them at this winery were over 300 years old. As you can see from the pictures, this winery had exceedingly attractive grounds that added considerable to the overall experience. The food and wine of course were "top drawer" and the weather was a beautiful summer day with a gentle breeze. We also visited a winery and coffee roaster in the same area called Lourensford which we had a wine tasting and we picked up freshly ground coffee. Overall a very pleasant ... read more

We'll after spending 46 1/2 hours (door to door) travelling we finally arrived at our Winter retreat on December 31st, Tuesday afternoon. Our hosts, Jane and Jim Yeomans invited us to a New Years get together at their place (Highcliff House) and we met some of their friends and family. We actually made it until midnight and therefore saw the New Year, at least in South Africa. (7 hours ahead of TO) It's been quite a long period of adjusting to the time zone change and we wouldn't recommend taking 2 back to back overnight flights. It's been several days and we still are experiencing interrupted sleep. Gordons Bay is about 1 hour outside of Cape Town with neighbouring communities such as Strand (5 km beech), Somerset West and about 40 minutes drive to Stellenbosch which ... read more

I arrived at Gordon's Bay to beautiful sunshine on the hills, which was a great first impression to what lay ahead. It soon became a warm family environment at the appartments we all lived in and i have met such a wounderful group of friends who have been great company and support throughout! The time so far seems to have flown by, i have worked at the Nceduluntu Educare centre in Nomzamo which has been incredibly rewarding! The centre was set up recently with funds from the GVI charitable trust for families who cannot afford care for their children, they pay R1 a day (the equivillant to 1p a day in the UK) and the children are cared for, fed and educated by the volounteers (programs running from two weeks to a year with a constant ... read more
