If the title didn't clue you in yet, today was our last full day in Cape Town. As I mentioned in yesterday's post we had our tour of Robben Island cancelled yesterday which meant that today we would have to choose between shark diving or going to Robben Island. And our choice was..... whale watching! Alright, I know that wasn't one of the choices but I'm a mean teacher and I love trick questions so let me explain. We got a call this morning from our travel agent here in South Africa informing us that due to choppy seas (again) shark diving had been cancelled. However, the ferry was running to Robben Island. Unfortunatey, even though our agent had told us on Friday that she had reserved us Robben Island tickets for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, somehow she did not have tickets to Robben Island for us today and they were completely sold out so there was no possible way we could go. Naturally, Jason and I were pretty pissed. The two things that I was looking forward to the most were Robben Island and shark diving and now because of our agent's poor planning, we are unable to do either
of them. (On a side note, this agent I keep referring to is NOT the agent that I booked the trip through. My travel agent in NYC hired this travel agent in South Africa to take care of all the day to day stuff, so I did not hire this person to book my trip.) Since we had no other activities planned for today and it was our last full day in town we told our agent that she needed to find something for us to do since we did not want to sit in our hotel room all day. After waiting around for a couple of hours we ended up with a plan. In the morning we took a short, 15 minute helicopter tour around Cape Town. Neither of us had ever been in a helicopter before so it was a pretty cool experience. The flight is much bumpier than an airplane but we got to see all around town and Table Mountain from a different perspective.
After our flight we went on a whale watching cruise in Table Bay. We ended up seeing out first whale inside the harbor and saw a couple more out in the
bay. After getting out of the harbor and into open water we finally began to understand why our sea related activities were continuously cancelled. The swells in the bay were enormous and sitting on the boat felt like being in a rocking chair. I literally was sliding across the wooden bench because of how far the boat was leaning. Unfortunately, I ended up getting pretty sea sick and plastered the side of the boat with vomit. I have never gotten sea sick before so for about 2 and a half of the 3 hours we were on the boat, I was pretty miserable. Regardless, I still saw the whales and let Jason take the photos so it worked out. Once I got on land again I felt pretty much back to normal.
This evening Jason and I are headed out again for a nice dinner and we're both looking forward to enjoying our last night here. Tomorrow morning we're off on a 7AM flight headed for Botswana for the second half of our trip. Hopefully the lodge there will have internet access so I can continue posting these daily, otherwise I'll make one big post when I return to
the US.
