01 Waterbuck
A waterbuck looking at us. Geo: -23.0772, 31.4024
We enjoyed a little sleep in this morning before Paul insisted that we had to get going for our morning drive. It was a short game drive and all that we saw was a waterbuck, in hindsight it would have been the perfect morning to continue sleeping in! Back at camp we had breakfast and spent some time exploring the rest camp area. Firstly we walked to the wooden deck which overlooks Pioneer Dam. From here there was a great view of the dam, but unfortunately we could not see any animals or even birds.
We went for a walk on the path which runs along the river. I stopped to observe a millipede – it had hundreds of legs and was crawling all over the branches. On the other side of the dam we saw a herd of impalas, waterbuck, crocodiles and a few birds. The camp seemed to be full of Mopane Trees.
It was time for a little rest and lunch. Then at 2pm we were back in the car and off for our afternoon game drive. The first thing we saw was a buffalo carcass that has been enjoyed by the predators (just the skeleton was

I am at the end of the viewing deck looking out at Pioneer Dam. left) and a waterbuck. We stopped at a hide overlooking a river. From here we saw many hippos in the water and they were all glaring at us. Back on the road we followed a giraffe that was walking in the middle of the road. We saw old baobab trees and zebras.
For the next hour we sat in a hide which overlooked a river. Just like when we were here yesterday, there were plenty of hippos in the river. On the bank of the river there was also a large crocodile, just lying still, not moving at all. Back in the river the hippos we being active- going under the water, yawning and irritating each other. The crocodile was now lying with his mouth open; it looked like he was smiling. It got up and walked a metre or so away from the river and lay down again.
I then got really excited, got my camera ready and waited for the moment to start taking photographs. A waterbuck had walked along the river towards the crocodile. A bush had hidden the crocodile from the waterbuck's view. I was really hoping to see the crocodile kill the waterbuck. It would

The view of the dam from the lookout point. be an experience to observe such a sighting. The waterbuck continued eating grass along the river and was getting closer to the crocodile. It had not seen the crocodile. The crocodile stood up and slowly walked towards the water and then lay down again. Unfortunately the crocodile showed no interest in the waterbuck. Paul wasn't expecting the crocodile to take down the waterbuck, as crocodiles would attack their prey from within the water.
It didn't take us long to drive back to camp. Tonight we enjoyed the comfort of the chalet, as tomorrow night we were going to be back in the tent.
