The goal today was to go to Soweto, but after I called a tour company, I quickly realized that it was not going to happen. For a 3hr afternoon tour, they wanted to charge almost as much as the 10hr safari we went on a few days ago. I don’t think so.
So we went to Pretoria instead, which is 51km up the road from where we are staying. We didn’t know what we were going to do there, but we thought we’d go anyway. We knew the Union Building is there, which is the South African government building.
As you drive into town, you immediately face a massive building that sits on a hillside. As we got closer, we realized it was the University of South Africa, potentially the best and biggest in the country. In our travels, we met a South African that is studying Medicine there, so it must be good. The city is very nice, clean, and kind of looks like a university town.
By coincidence, we drove right in front of the Union Building, but we had to figure out how to get closer so that we could walk around and take photos.
We found a way up and tried to enter a private entrance that was the entrance to the President’s Office. Oooooppsss!!! We then drove around the side and found some parking.
The front yard is massive and nicely taken care of. As you walk around, you see lots of workers doing maintenance on the yard. The building itself is massive too, and looks really cool. We had seen the building in the movie Invictus a few months ago, so it was cool being here. We took some photos, but the sun was right behind the building, which made it a little tough to get the shots we wanted. Oh well, you can't have everything go your way. hehe
After the Union Building, we drove by the Loftus Versteld Stadium, which hosted a number of games in the World Cup. We continued our slow drive through the city looking for a place to eat. As we searched, we ended up in the core center of the city, which was very nice as well. We chose to keep going and perhaps find something at another part of the city. Eventually, we ate lunch at a cafe and then found an
Internet Cafe nearby, where we spent a few hours catching up on blogging and Janel doing her Facebooking/emailing.
In the evening, we drove back to Johannesburg and went to the Festival Mall, where our friend Edi had taken us for lunch a few days ago. At the mall, we were looking for a pizza place, and right beside it, found a movie theatre. We got a pizza to eat later, put it in the car and got tickets to watch Eclipse. Alright, not my kind of movie, but it was Date Night in South Africa after all. hehe I had seen the first movie, and but not the second one, New Moon, so Janel filled me in on all the necessary details so that I wouldn't be completely lost. We got some popcorn and went into the theatre.
Oh, and Chelsea and Jen, Janel will go with you again when we get back home. We had no choice really, the other movies sucked. Hehe The other thing is that only 10 people were in the theatre...when does that ever happen with Twilight movies?
