Day 19. 7
thFeb (Friday)
Up at 7:30 bit of a wash & bag packing then down for breakfast – 2 boiled eggs with rolls, butter & olives, plus coffee (not very nice) and orange-juice (from concentrate). Not impressed by breakfast but triple room was good, which I only got as I asked for wi-fi at reception so they swapped rooms. Another Premier Inn really but with a small balcony with a small chair upon it. Tepid shower but with a working lift. Reminded me of the one in Agadir. But I got this one for it’s location, 300yds to the train station, so an easy haul at 9:15 when I left the Hotel Corail…
Had to hang around a while before let onto platform & train. Then carriage & seat, these are 8 seat compartments with a sliding, glass-paned door. Put my bags onto overhead luggage racks and sat in a window seat with fold-out table (thin oblong becomes twice as wide oblong). A guy joined me and I mentioned that I was in the incorrect seat, but was willing to move. He said it was OK, just sit anywhere, this was 2
nd Class after all. We got chatting
as he spoke good English, soon he was off to Glasgow, so I gave him some hints about phrases like “Ye ken?” “Canny wee bairns” etc. We also chatted about Brexit and Capitalism but at the next station an old woman and her daughter got on and sat opposite me and we stopped chatting for a while. He got off just before Casablanca Voyageurs at Casablanca Ville but shook my hand before he left.
10mins later I got off at Casablanca Voyageurs. I had 90mins here so went for an expensive cheese roll with cafe-au-lait for 34Dh. Then I wandered off to the loo and eventually outside to sit in the sun and then in the shade. It had been a misty morning in Marrakech, which cleared as we left, then it was hot sun to Casablanca, but not too hot now – low 20’s. I sat with others, on benches beneath the shade of some trees and watched the trams come & go between the large palm trees in the plaza (long trams – about 6 carriages). With 30mins to go I entered the crowded area awaiting platform entry. A lady sat beside me and attempted a conversation
Nice orange flowers
Not on our track.... in French, I had to apologise for my poor French, but she spoke good English.
After we were allowed on the train, I found my seat, downstairs this time, but with a window seat in a 4-seat-with-table layout, which I had to myself till Rabat. The sun kept shining through my window so I was constantly pulling the blind up or down and not taking many pics. At Rabat, two rather glamorous girls got on and one sat beside me & the other opposite (there was no escape), they both spoke good English but were doing work on their lap-tops so we didn’t chat for long.
Getting off in Tangier at 4:15pm I wandered over the road & picked up a petit taxi to Petit Socco near my hotel. A friendly lad helped me to my hotel with my bags, and the uniformed doorman helped to carry my bags upstairs to reception where a very nice young woman made me feel at home. Nice twin room with sink and separate shower, loo is in hallway outside… Amazing to think I was in Tafraoute yesterday morning!
Wi-Fi seems good so will post this now (if I can upload
photo’s).
